When Glen Powell hosted “Saturday Night Live,” he welcomed a special guest into the audience.
In his opening monologue, the “Running Man” star revealed that he was originally scheduled to host “SNL” four years ago to coincide with the premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick.” He and his family were celebrating when he got the call to host. I shared that moment with a UPS driver who happened to be delivering a package at the same time.
“So we all took a selfie with him, and this is a selfie to commemorate the occasion,” Powell said, before sharing an actual selfie of himself, his family, and the UPS driver. “But then my dreams were taken away from me,” he continued. “SNL had to rescind their offer because ‘Top Gun’ was postponed due to COVID-19. Lorne Michaels literally called me and said, ‘Without ‘Top Gun,'” and these are his words: ‘No one will know who you are.’
Powell lamented that for the past four years, UPS drivers thought he was a liar. So when he got the call to host “SNL” again, he and his family decided to make things right.
“My sisters tracked him down. The women in my family are horrified,” he joked. “They found this UPS guy’s cell phone number. His name is Mitch. So to prove to Mitch that I’m not a liar, I flew him to New York…He thought it was a scam, but he still came and is sitting in the bleachers tonight.”
Powell then called Mitch on stage and the two took another selfie together, bringing things full circle for Driver and the entire Powell family.
“I had to wait my whole life, plus four years, to get here,” Powell said. “But if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that the best things in life don’t happen overnight, and no one knows that better than UPS.”
