Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks has expanded AFM’s reach and launched global sales of Christian Bernard’s “Under Your Feet” at an event in Los Angeles ahead of its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Festival on November 15th.
The film stars Maribel Verdu (Pan’s Labyrinth, Y tu mamá también) and Sofía Otero, winner of the Bernale and Goya Awards for her role in the fantasy thriller 20,000 Species of Bees, directed by Bernard, known for the hits 76 80 03 and Echoes (The Ecology of Crime), and produced by Carlos Juárez (The Ecology of Crime). platform”), Guido Rudo of Basque Films and Filmsharks, joined by Netflix Spain and Spanish public broadcaster RTVE.
The story follows Isabelle (Verdoux), who moves with her two children into a luxury apartment where the rent is shockingly low, despite the strange way in which tenants are selected. After they are accepted and begin living in, three elderly neighbors who live downstairs begin to turn their lives upside down.
“This is a very well-crafted, visually sophisticated piece of cinema aimed at fantasy/adventure enthusiasts, especially those looking for a story similar to the movies we’ve all fallen in love with, like The Goonies, Super 8, and Stranger Things,” Rudd said, noting the remake’s appeal.
“We really found in Bilbao and its architecture the ideal setting to tell this very atmospheric, classic horror story,” director Juarez said of filming, which took advantage of the Basque city’s generous tax credits amounting to up to 70%. Once a gray industrial city, the presence of the Guggenheim Museum has transformed this city, which now boasts Spain’s most extensive filmmaking incentives.
Negotiations are underway with buyers in Latin America, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Russia/CIS, France, Taiwan, and German-speaking countries, with some deals expected to close soon.
Theatrical distribution in Spain is still under negotiation, but release is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
FilmSharks recently closed worldwide sales rights to TelevisaUnivision’s morgue-set genre thriller “Torment,” billed as one of the year’s biggest box office bets in Mexico. Additionally, “Torment,” written and directed by Olaro Rubio, whose 2012 documentary “Gimme the Power” was screened at SXSW, has also begun sales at the American Film Market.
In October, FilmSharks secured all rights, including derivative IP, to the Colombian project “Insurrección” in development. This political action thriller stars renowned Colombian actor and producer Marlon Moreno (“El Capo,” “Dog Eat Dog”).
“Insurrección,” written by Colombian screenwriter Mauricio Marulanda González, is in development with plans for both a Spanish and English version.
AFM will be held from November 11th to 16th.
