Ryan Coogler made his first “Creed” movie because his father, Ira, loved the “Rocky” series.
Now it’s mother Jocelyn’s turn. Coogler said she signed on to reboot “The X-Files” because her mother was a big fan of the Fox sci-fi drama series.
“My relationship with my mother is one of ‘The X-Files,’ just like my father’s relationship with ‘Rocky,'” Coogler told me Friday at a screening of Cinespia’s “Sinners” at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. “My mom means the world to me. She’s actually here tonight. So this is a big deal for me. I want to do the right thing by her and my fans. She’s read some of the stuff I wrote for this. She’s so motivated.”
Regarding the rumor that Daniel Deadwyler is being eyed as the lead in the reboot, Coogler laughed and said, “I can’t confirm or deny that.” So is the possibility that original “X-Files” stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will appear.
Sinners was the first film to be screened at Cinespia in the same year it was released. “I’m very excited,” Kugler said. “This is a dream come true. It’s my favorite event in Los Angeles. I’m from the Bay Area, and L.A. is like our cousin. There are many differences between Southern California and Northern California, but we have more in common than we are different. But Cinespia is a very L.A. event and very unique. It was my dream to make a film that could be shown here.”
Michael B. Jordan stars in the vampire horror film, playing the dual roles of twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their Mississippi hometown after World War I to open a juke joint. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jamie Lawson, Omar Miller, Li Jun Lee, and Delroy Lindo.

Sinners, released theatrically in April by Warner Bros. Pictures, grossed $367 million worldwide.
Jordan has consistently garnered Oscar buzz for his projects with Coogler, including Fruitvale Station, Creed and the Black Panther series. Director Coogler said of the actor’s performance in “Sinners,” “I think he stepped up to the next level in this movie.” “We asked him to technically do this difficult thing of playing two different characters, but it was also a performance that required the backstory he had before to pull it off. To see him recognized by his peers and others in the industry, I know it’s going to mean a lot to him.”
Omar Benson Miller, Seb Ohanian, Jingsy Coogler and Ryan Coogler attend the ‘Sinners’ Cinespia Screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on October 17th.
Coogler also talked about how Machine Gun Kelly revealed that he was going to audition for a movie in the summer, but declined because he didn’t feel comfortable saying the N-word. “That makes sense,” the filmmaker said. “I get that. I know he has a black daughter, and acting is acting, but you have to be comfortable with whatever it is.”
“Sinners” will be re-released on October 30th for Halloween in November. 5 screenings in select IMAX theaters. An official line of “Sinners” costumes is also available at the Spirit Halloween Store.
