Brandy outraged fans on Saturday when she abruptly walked off stage during the Chicago show of her “The Boy Is Mine” tour with Monica.
According to a video shared by
Later, she was seen approaching the sound staff backstage.
One onlooker theorized that the R&B hitmaker, 46, was upset about the sound quality and confronted staff about the issue.
Monica, 44, took the stage about 30 minutes later and finished the show, but the audience didn’t get to hear her and Brandy’s 1998 song “The Boy Is Mine.”
When attendees realized that Brandy would not be returning to finish the two-hour concert, it caused an uproar online.
“Listen, I don’t care why. I noticed the technical issues early on and ignored them,” one critic wrote in an Instagram thread.
“But someone should have called ‘Hold’ and made a quick announcement on God Mic. That’s basic professionalism. Don’t confuse the audience. It’s especially disrespectful to those who paid to attend. I hope everyone’s okay, but you have to take responsibility. That was in such bad taste.”
“There are thousands of people who paid for an AF-KING show. Let’s all work together. Is there a problem with the sound? Don’t attack. Talk to the audience. Sing a cappella (sic),” another person added via X.
Some came to Brandi’s defense, suggesting she may have retired early due to health issues.
“If Brandi left the stage and never came back, something serious must have happened,” one supporter claimed. “Brandi wouldn’t do that for any reason. I just hope Brandi is okay.”
A second person agreed, pointing out, “It’s rude for people to judge her without even knowing why she left the stage.”
In a statement to Page Six, Brandy said that after weeks of grueling rehearsals, she “experienced dehydration and the feeling of passing out.”
“Despite not feeling well, I made the decision to come back and give it my all. Some adjustments had to be made and the show was very technical. Unfortunately, it was not possible to fully connect with the work sonically. I really appreciate everyone’s best efforts,” she said.
“I went from the arena to seek medical attention near me and have been taking appropriate precautions moving forward. Your understanding, patience, and unwavering faith means so much to me.”
Brandi also thanked her “sister” Monica for “stepping up with grace and professionalism” before saying she would be returning to the stage for the show in Indianapolis on Sunday night.
In 2022, the “Have You Ever” singer was reportedly hospitalized after suffering a seizure.
A representative for Brandi could not be reached for comment to Page Six.
She is scheduled to return to the stage at Indiana’s Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday night.
The “Best Friends” songstress and Monica are scheduled to kick off their tour Thursday in Cincinnati, Ohio, and wrap up their show in Jacksonville, Florida, on Dec. 14.
