Richard Marx never paid attention to the lustful female fans that flocked to him in the 80s and 90s.
The “Right Here Waiting” crooner told Page Six in a recent exclusive interview that while “of course” there were groupies, “it wasn’t a big trap for me at the time.”
Marx explains that he ignored them for two reasons.
“I was already dating the woman who would become my first wife (Dirty Dancing star Cynthia Rhodes) and we were together for almost 30 years,” he says.
“I didn’t want to be a fool,” the Grammy winner said, adding, “It was a little easier to resist because I was conscious of myself as a guy who was still in high school and couldn’t date.”
“And all of a sudden, all night long, there was a big video on MTV and now girls were throwing themselves at me,” he recalled, adding that instead of thinking of himself as sexy, he compared them to “the same girls who didn’t look at me twice two weeks ago.”
“So I think that’s helped me stay calm and have a pretty good relationship with the whole temptation of thinking I’m something I’m not,” he explains.
Markus and Rose have three sons and divorced in 2014.
He married MTV alumnus Daisy Fuentes the following year, and he still can’t believe his good fortune.
“I still look at her across the room and see her in the car next to me and I just can’t believe it,” he said excitedly. “I was crazy about her…You know, sometimes I say to myself, I can’t believe I’m married to Daisy Fuentes. It’s really crazy.”
Marx has had a long and successful career spanning over 40 years.
He has released 14 No. 1 singles and has written for many other artists, including *NSYNC, Luther Vandross, Kenny Rogers, Barbra Streisand, and Ringo Starr.
Remarkably, Marx never experienced writer’s failure and claims to not believe in it.
“If you have to write, just write,” he says. “Write. Even if you write for 10 minutes, you’re going to run into two bars somewhere along the way. Well, that’s okay. And then you’ll write from there. But in my opinion, writer’s block is just an excuse not to write.”

“Honestly, I haven’t written a song in years. It’s been 40-something years. I don’t remember ever having something go through my head for 24 hours,” he added.
