Jim Carrey is in talks to star in a Jetsons movie at Warner Bros. Pictures, with Colin Trevorrow in talks to direct, Variety has confirmed.
Trevorrow and Joe Epstein, who previously directed “Jurassic World Dominion,” are in talks to write the script. Information about the storyline was not immediately available.
The last “Jetsons” feature film was the 1990 animated “Jetsons: The Movie.” There have been many attempts over the years to create a live-action version of the classic family animated feature, which first aired in 1962. The series was revived several times in the 1970s and ’80s, and familiarized generations of viewers with the typical space-dwelling nuclear family.
The story revolved around George and Jane Jetson, their children Judy and Elroy, and their dog Astro. The family lives in a space-age-style Orbit City and enjoys innovations that were considered highly futuristic at the time, such as video chat, household robots, and even flying cars that are, or are becoming, part of everyday life 60 years later.
Unsuccessful attempts to bring The Jetsons to the screen included a 2003 version directed by Adam Shankman, a 2007 CGI version directed by Robert Rodriguez, and a 2017 animated version.
Carrey most recently appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog and its two sequels. He has a long history of playing iconic characters such as the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but he has appeared less on screen in recent years.
Prior to Jurassic World Dominion, Trevorrow directed The Henry Book, Jurassic World, and the indie film Safety Not Guaranteed.
