Globo celebrates 100th anniversary with deals with Anonymous Content, BBC, Fox and Leshem

CANNES, France — “The future began 100 years ago,” declared a three-minute clip shown at Sunday night’s Globo Showcase Cocktail at Mipcom, documenting the evolution of the Brazilian communications giant from its 1925 newspaper to radio and the Rede Globo TV network.

Globo’s rise in international partnerships and deals, confirmed by Globo’s head of international business and co-productions Angela Cora on stage at the Cannes Carlton Hotel on Sunday, signals that Globo’s future is beginning again.

As a country the size of a continent, Brazil’s battle this century has been to reach out to the rest of the world, and Globo’s challenge has been to join the global mainstream, consolidating a portfolio that stretches from telenovelas to other forms of entertainment and business models (while ensuring travel can continue).

In an unannounced deal, Cora announced that Globoplay has signed a deal with Anonymous Content for the U.S. version of “The Others.” Created by Lucas Paraiso (Under Pressure) and charting the current prevalence of intolerance, The Others is set in a gated community on the outskirts of Rio, where an argument between two teenagers escalates into a bloody confrontation between their parents, he told Variety. The format has already been sold to Germany (ndF) and Greece (produced by Primavisione and broadcast by Alpha).

Another way to join the global conversation is through international co-productions with major “A” list creatives and companies. Announced just before the showcase through his production label Crossing Oceans, original “Euphoria” creator Ron Leshem will produce “Paranoia” in collaboration with Koby Gal Raday and Ilda Santiago’s Janeiro Studios and Brazil’s leading streaming platform, Globoplay.

Developed jointly by Leshem and Claudia Jubin, who broke out this summer as the head writer for Globoplay’s blockbuster hit Perfect Days, Paranoia was described by producers to Variety as “a mix of Black Swan and Whiplash, the feel-good atmosphere and effects of The Queen’s Gambit, and the generation-defining impact of Euphoria.”

Globo and Fox Entertainment Studios, the world’s leading producer of Christmas movies, announced on Saturday that they will partner to develop and produce original English-language Christmas movies set and shot in Brazil. Aiming to ensure cultural authenticity, Globo provides creative guidance to accurately reflect Brazilian culture and traditions, including Brazil’s unique Christmas celebrations that take place during the Brazilian summer.

Late last week, BBC Studios and Brazil’s Globo signed a ground-breaking first co-production deal for a docu-series that will “take viewers into the heart of” Brazil’s vast Amazon rainforest. “Details of the series are still being kept under wraps, but it will be produced by BBC Studios specialists Factual Productions and Globo and will be a story of Brazilian origin,” Janet Brown, president of global content sales at BBC Studios, told Variety.

Globoplay drama, documentary and film director Alex Medeiros detailed other co-production arrangements at the showcase. In Beta Film announced at Mipcom last year. Filming begins this week with Fremantle on the “Crime Inc” series, and with Gaumont USA on the “Deluxe” series, which depicts the rise and fall of Brazilian high fashion icon Eliana Tranchesi.

New Globo program ignites fire

In straight sales, Globo licensed both “All the Flowers” and “Xuxa, the Documentary” by Brazil’s biggest pop star to Argentina’s top network Telefe.

In a trailer shown at Globoplay’s latest release showcase, the series “Perfect Days” (a stylish but fast-paced, unsettling kidnapping thriller that Variety magazine named one of Mipcon’s must-see TV titles) has become Globoplay’s most-watched original series of any nationality since its summer premiere, Cora announced, calling Anonymous Content’s Brazilian production “a thrilling series that still influences me to this day.” Another side of our audiovisual work.”

Mipcom’s second title, “Anything Goes,” is a gorgeous, fast-paced remake of one of Brazil’s biggest telenovelas from the 1980s, and the moment of the villainess’ murder reached 56% ratings. Meanwhile, the production is Brazil’s highest-grossing primetime telenovela by Globo, with the participation of 16 brands including BYD, Corona, Uber, Amazon, Paramount and L’Oréal. With 76 branded content actions.
