One of Shailene Woodley’s upcoming roles is to bring her to new territory.
The 33-year-old actress is set to star and produce the Janis Joplin biopic, Janis Joplin.
Pre-production has been ongoing with the project and has been in development for many years, and Woodley told people in an exclusive interview that she feels that singing for this role is not the easiest job.
“It’s very scary to sing. It’s very fragile,” admits the Emmy, Thug and Golden Globe nominated star.

Hollywood reporters and Rolling Stone reported in September 2024 that Joplin’s biopic was moving forward with the help of a California tax credit.
“I feel like Janice feels like he’s listening to her ears. Zipper her psychedelic Porsche PCH knows that her story brings opportunities and funding to the city and those who have something very important to her,” Woodley said in a statement on the film at the time.

When appearing on tonight’s show a few months later, the Big Little Lies star spoke about the film and told host Jimmy Fallon, “We’ve been working on it for seven years. It’s just – she’s a very groovy chick. She really brought light to this planet in a truly singular way.”
When Fallon asked Woodley if the film could access clothing from Joplin’s era, she admitted, “We have costumes. Everything.”

Woodley is working with Mars to raise awareness of PET adoption over global adoption weekends, but is currently working with Linda Perry on Joplin-based features.
The four blonde lead artists are “an incredible songwriters, singers and music producers. And she and I have been working very closely for a few years,” Woodley tells people.
Actors who previously obsessed with Joplin’s biographies that never came to fruition before Woodley’s project include Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink, Melissa Atheridge, Brittany Murphy and Rene Zelweger.
