The 62nd Golden Horse Awards have announced the nominees. Taiwanese drama “A Foggy Tale” has won 11 nominations in major categories, including best narrative features, directorial and acting honors.
The Golden Horse Award is considered the most prestigious award for films made with all different variations of Chinese. The contest has collected 593 submissions this year. It consists of 80 storytelling features, 3 animation features, 64 documentary features, 310 live action short films, 79 documentary short films, and 57 animated short films.
“Left-handed Girl” closely follows nine nominations, including best narrative features, support performance, new directors, and technical categories. Two films, each tied together by eight nods: “Mother Bumi,” where the World premieres at the Tokyo International Film Festival, was recognized in the narrative features, director, lead actress and technical categories, while “Family Issues” secured nominations for acting performances, new directors and adapted scripts.
The best story features races include “Footty Tales,” “Left-Handed Girl,” “Mother Bumi,” “Queerpanorama,” and “The Waves Will Corry Us.”
Competing for the best managers are Chen Yu Ha-seun (“The Tale of the Fog”), Tsao Shi Han (“Before the Bright Days”), Lau Keck Hat (“The Waves Carry Us”), Jun Li (“Queerpanorama”), and Chongkeat-Aun (“Mother Bhumi”).
Best lead actor candidates include Richie Ko (“Good Child”), Will or (“Foot Talk”), Jang Huxiao Chuan (Pingyao’s winner, “Deep Quiet Room”), Jang Chen (“Lucky Lu”), and Run Way Hua (“Family Issues”).
The best major actress categories include Caitlin Fan (“Story of Fog”), Renelyu (“Unexpected courage”), Ariel Lin (“Deep Quiet Room”), Alexia Kao (“Family Matter”), and Fanbimbing (“Mother Bumi”).
Shui Qi’s directorial debut “Girl,” which bowed in Venice and won the best director in Busan, looked like a Shuuin of several nominations, but Variety understands that the film wasn’t submitted to the Golden Horse Awards as the team was busy with post-production and missed the July 31 deadline.
The festival also unveiled the outstanding Taiwanese filmmaker of the year, Gaffer Joy Chung. According to a quote from the ju judge, Chung “has provided many fellow filmmakers with reliable support and inspiration for her exquisiteness and focus. Her recent works include “A Foggy Tale” and “Unexpected courage.”
Actor Chen Shu Hwang will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards ceremony will be held at Taipei Music Center on November 22nd. All nominated films will be screened at the Golden Horse Film Festival, which begins on November 6th.
