Julia Roberts confirmed she is debating the possibility of appearing in the sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”
“They’re talking to me,” Roberts said in a variety cover story about “After the Hunt,” a psychological thriller directed by Luca Guadanino, starring Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebili and Chloe Sevigny. In an interview, Guadagnino cried out that he would direct Roberts as “a moment” in the sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”
In July, news broke that the sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding” was developing early, with songs from “Past Life” and “Materialist” filmmaker Celine attached to write the screenplay for the project. Development News teased Dermot Mulroney, who starred alongside Roberts in the 1997 original, in the New York Post, saying there’s a story about a sequel.
“My Best Friend’s Wedding” starred Julia Roberts as food critic Julian Potter. Julian Potter discovers longtime friend Michael O’Neill (Mulroney). Realizing that she is in love with Michael, Julian plans to sabotage the ceremony. Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett also starred in ROM-COM.
The 1997 original won $127 million in North America, ranked as the ninth highest national domestic release of the year. The film also won three Golden Globe nominations, and in 2022 Variety ranked one of the 100 best movies of all time.
On the horizon, Roberts stars in “After the Hunt.” Alma Olson gets caught up in the midst of a sexual abuse accusation involving one of her students and a colleague. The film will premiere in theaters on October 10th.
