Disney’s Zootopia 2 has gotten off to a phenomenal start in China, setting multiple box office records and showing strong momentum for the animated sequel’s global expansion.
The film, a buddy-cop movie featuring anthropomorphic animals as rivals in altercations, grossed $34 million on its opening day in China, Disney said, making it the highest-grossing first-day and single-day box office ever for a U.S. animated film in the region. This performance also represents the strongest opening day for a US title in China since May 2021.
This opening day was the 10th highest opening day ever for a US film in China. The social score is excellent, with the film receiving a 9.7 rating on Maoyan, which compares favorably with the original “Zootopia” (9.5), “Inside Head 2” (9.1) and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (8.8).
“Zootopia 2” has grossed an estimated $81.1 million worldwide, including $39.5 million from the domestic market and $41.6 million from international territories. The film was released in 17 markets on Wednesday, including France, Germany, Italy, China and South Korea.
It was the second-highest opening day domestic release ever for a Wednesday before Thanksgiving, behind Moana 2 ($57.9 million), and the third-highest opening domestic opening day for a Walt Disney Animation Studios animated title, behind Moana 2 and Frozen 2 ($42.2 million).
Audience reception was generally positive, with the film receiving a 95% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an “A” on CinemaScore, and a post-track rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Beyond China, “Zootopia 2” secured the number one position in most international markets. In South Korea, this opening day was the fifth highest opening day in animation history, and the second highest opening day of any Walt Disney Animation Studios film, behind Frozen 2. The film grossed $1.7 million in the region and had a social score of 9.30 on Naver and 98% on CGV.
In Europe, the film achieved the MPA Animation opening day record of 2025 in France, Germany, and Italy, earning $2.4 million, $700,000, and $600,000, respectively.
The sequel will continue to roll out this weekend and by Sunday will be released in approximately 93% of the world, including all markets except Japan, which opens next weekend.
