“Zootopia 2” dominated the Chinese box office in the Nov. 28-30 window, grossing RMB 1.538 billion ($216.6 million) in the first two days and reaching RMB 1.922 billion ($270.7 million) by Sunday, according to Artisan Gateway.

Including previews, Walt Disney’s sequel raked in an estimated $272 million. This was one of the most explosive launches in the history of the market.

This debut film has the sixth-highest opening of all time for any film in China, and the second-highest opening for a non-local title behind Avengers: Endgame. This was also the highest opening ever for an anime released outside of China. In just five days, “Zootopia 2” became the highest-grossing non-domestic animated film in history, and the highest-grossing imported film since “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). The film has already become the fourth highest-grossing animated film released in China, both domestically and internationally, surpassing the original Zootopia’s lifetime gross of $236 million. The first movie was beloved in China, but ever since Zootopialand opened at the Shanghai Disneyland theme park, the property’s popularity has exploded.

The film also recorded the 9th highest single-day box office gross in China on its fourth day, and became the highest single-day box office gross for an MPA title in history, surpassing “Avengers: Endgame.” This is now the highest MPA opening of 2025.

Aniplex’s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Castle” came in second place with $5.7 million, bringing the total to $88 million. The film, directed by Haruo Tonosaki and produced by ufotable, is an adaptation of the climactic final chapter of Koyoharu Gotoge’s hit manga. The voice actor cast includes Natsuki Hanae, Akari Kito, Hiro Shimono, and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka. The film depicts the Demon Slayer Corps’ all-out attack on Muzan Kibutsuji’s stronghold in order to end the war between humans and demons.

Last weekend’s champion, Huace Pictures’ Bi Gan-directed “Resurrection,” slipped to third place under the weight of Disney’s release, earning $3.4 million in its second weekend. The November 22nd release value currently stands at $25.1 million. In Resurrection, starring Jackson Yi, Shu Qi, Mark Zhao, Li Genshi, Fan Jue, and Chen Yongzhong, humanity loses its ability to dream, and only one creature remains captivated by the illusion of a fading dream world. When a woman with the rare power to perceive these illusions appears, she chooses to enter the monster’s dreams and resolves to uncover the truth hidden within.

Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” added $1.3 million for a total of $37 million.

Qiangdian Media’s “My World Without Me” is a drama about a woman’s conflict and confusion that ultimately leads to her transformation and rebirth, directed by Tian Hailong and executive produced by Zhang Hanyou, with Tian starring alongside Tang Kai, Tian Haiyan, Xiao Bing, and Tong Ruixin. After its release on November 27th, the film debuted at the box office with $1 million in two days, breaking into the top five and starting with a cumulative gross of $1.4 million.

China’s weekend box office grossed $229.7 million, a significant increase from last weekend’s $44 million, bringing the 2025 year-to-date total to $6.777 billion, a 19.8% increase from the same point in 2024.
