German Powerhouse ZDF Studios, which marks the latest high-end moves in Spanish dramas, has announced that co-producer thriller “Patagonia. Escon de El Paraiso” (Patagonia. Paradise is hidden.
The series brings together Chilean Mariawood Producion and Spanish Atlantica films, and with international support from ZDF Studios, the project will move towards production while filling the lending gap. Shooting is for 2026.
Directed by Chilean filmmakers Giulio Giulquera (Noticia de Un Secuestro), suspense-driven dramas itziarituño (Money Heist), Benjamín Vicuña (Argentina, 1985) and Unai Arana (La Infiltrada).
Written by Luis Barrales and Anastasia ayazi, the story follows Alicia, her mother whose son disappears under mystical circumstances, desperately searches across the continent into the life landscape of Patagonia, discovering a paradise that hides a dark secret.
“This is the story of a mother and her son, a story of the invisible weight of what we inherit as a family. In the raw beauty of Chilean Patagonia, it becomes a call to preserve nature and save it from the blindness and greed of humanity.”
“Patagonia” already has public funds in Chile and is trying to tie incentives in the Basque country.
The project is expanding ZDF Studio’s increased investment in Spanish dramas. The company recently co-produced RTVE’s “Weiss & Morales,” a four-part crime series filmed in the Canary Islands, and boarded as “Boundless,” Magellan-Elcano Epic and International Distributor, earning worldwide rights for the second season of the horror reboot “Historias Para no Dormir.”
Chilean producer Maria Elena Wood won the award at the 2023 Platinno Awards for credits such as Cannes Dad (Cannoule 2020), Mary & Mike (Berlin Rail Series 2018), and Prime Video’s Noticia de Unsequistulo.
Based in Madrid and Vizcaia, Atlantica Film produced Chaplin: Spirit of Trump, the winner of the Ilizabusque Basque Cinema Award at San Sebastian 2024, and co-produced the animation feature for Fernando Trueber. Joint system.
“Patagonia. Paradise Hidden” will be sold on Wednesday, October 1st as part of the Co-Production and Funding Forum at Iberseries & Platino Industry 2025 in Madrid.
