Zayn Malik reflected on his relationship with Gigi Hadid in an interview on “Call Her Daddy” today.
He said that while he loves and respects Hadid, he doesn’t think he “loved her” even while they were dating.
The former couple started dating in 2015, when they were in their early 20s, and broke up for good in 2021, when they were in their late 20s.
Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik started dating in 2015 when they were 20 and 22 years old, respectively. Looking back, the former One Direction singer told Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy today that while he loves Hadid, he doesn’t know if he loved her while they were dating. The two had an on-off relationship from 2015 to 2021, and gave birth to a daughter, Kai, in September 2020.
Cooper asked Malik if he stands by what he said in a past interview that he had never been in love. He replied: “Yes, because my understanding of love is always evolving. At that moment, I may have thought it was love, but as I got older I realized that maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was desire. Maybe it was this. Maybe it was that. I don’t feel it was love.”
He continued, “Just to be fair and for the record, I will always love G because she is the reason my child is on this earth. And I have the utmost respect for her. I will always love her. But I don’t know if I ever loved her.”

He added that he understood how his initial comment was interpreted. “Because even though I said that, I think people took it a certain way. So I’m just like, ‘Oh, I respect this woman so much and I really, really love her, it’s just incredible,'” he explained. But yeah, no, but I don’t think I was in love with her at that point. Otherwise, I would have been a better version of myself. ”
Malik told Cooper earlier in the podcast that he’s single but hasn’t been open to dating in public lately. “I’m not looking for another public relationship. From experience, it doesn’t hurt anyone who has had a public relationship before,” he said. “I just learned from that experience that that doesn’t work for me. I’m a very private person. I don’t really try to get people’s approval or attention. So the relationship should be between me and the person. And I think that personality type, someone who doesn’t want to do that, suits me better.”
