A24 has released the trailer for the upcoming sci-fi horror movie Backrooms, starring Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Directed by Kane Parsons in his feature directorial debut, “The Backrooms” is based on the horror world that Parsons posted on viral found footage on YouTube. His anthology series debuted in 2022 and focused on the story of a therapist who searches for a patient who mysteriously disappears into a dimension beyond reality. Parsons, who was just 19 years old when he signed with A24, is the youngest filmmaker to co-produce with A24.
The script was written by Will Sudik and is based on the online urban legend of the same name, which was the inspiration for Parsons’ YouTube series.
In addition to Reinsve and Ejiofor, the cast also includes Mark Duplass (Creep), Finn Bennett (Knights of the Seven Kingdoms), Lukita Maxwell (Generations), and Avan Jogia (56 Days).
Chernin Entertainment, part of North Road Company, will co-finance the film in conjunction with A24. Producers include Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps Entertainment. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine are producing for 21 Laps Entertainment and Chris Ferguson is producing for Oddfellows Pictures. Wan’s Atomic Monster is produced by James Wan and Michael Clear, with Judson Scott serving as executive producer and Alena Glastal directing. Chris White, who brought the project to Atomic Monster, will also serve as executive producer. Additional producers include Roberto Patino.
Production began in Canada in July, with Chernin Entertainment co-financing the film with A24. A24 and Chernin Entertainment are co-studio on the film.
“The Backrooms” opens in theaters on May 29th. Check out the trailer below.
