Multi-hyphenate actors Wilmer Valderrama and Carla Santana Leto have joined the filmmaking team behind the acclaimed short documentary Rat Rod as executive producers. Directed by Jared and Carly Jakins, the film is an intimate portrait of a Mexican immigrant mechanic who navigates issues of identity, memory, and homeland while modifying salvaged cars in rural Utah.

Starting today, “Rat Rod” will be available to stream on Switchboard Magazine’s website and YouTube channel. The film, which follows mechanic Jorge Ramirez, recently secured consideration in the Oscar race after taking top honors at both the Seattle International Film Festival and the Nashville Film Festival and being considered for the 98th Academy Awards. It has also won awards from the San Francisco International Film Festival, Palm Springs Film Festival, Flickers Film Festival, and Indie Shorts Film Festival.

Valderrama, who is a producer through WV Entertainment’s WV Alternative division, said the film resonated deeply with him. “‘Rat Rod’ is more than just a documentary, it’s a testament to the strength and creativity of immigrant communities,” he said. “Jorge’s journey is one of perseverance, artistry and identity, and we are honored to share his story with the world.”

Santana Leto added that her upbringing influenced her connection to the project. “Growing up on the Mexican border, I was struck by the importance and value of sharing diverse stories and connecting with each other through our common humanity,” she said. “‘Rat Rod’ is an undeniable expression of the power of storytelling. Jorge’s story resonated with me, so I was honored to champion the film and shine a light on the experiences of people who may have traditionally been underrepresented in the film industry.”

In addition to directing, Carly and Jared Jakins produced the film for Switchboard Magazine with HB Phillips, Kellyn Ikegami, Celia Aniskovic, and Harlin Lawal.
