“Wicked” will premiere on NBC on November 19th.
NBCUniversal will air last year’s Universal Pictures blockbuster on terrestrial television just two days before the sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” hits theaters on Nov. 21.
“Wicked” grossed $756 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Broadway film of all time. It grossed $473 million in the U.S. alone, making it the highest domestic gross of any film released since its release on November 22, 2024. It also became a staple of Academy Awards season, receiving 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. At the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Critics Choice Awards, the film won awards for both Costume and Production Design, and at the Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture and Box Office Performance.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film also stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda from Wicked and Wicked: For Good. According to the official description, the sequel finds them “estranged and living with the consequences of their choices. When a girl from Kansas comes crashing into their lives, they must come together one last time and truly see each other in order to change themselves and all of Oz forever.”
In addition to Erivo and Grande, the cast also includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. Marc Platt and David Stone, who produced the original Broadway musical, are also producing the film.
On November 6, NBC will air a two-hour musical special, “Wicked: One Wonderful Night,” featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande singing music from the film along with the cast. The special will also feature cast interviews and behind-the-scenes moments.
