Selena Gomez, who married Benny Blanco last month, was “sobbing” and fearing the worst.
The “Calm Down” singer spoke at Fortune magazine’s “Most Powerful Women” conference in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, where she talked about relationship insecurities.
“This is how I personally work, but when something great happens in your life, you expect something bad to happen,” she told the audience.
Gomez, 33, admitted that even if something good happens, her mind always goes to the worst-case scenario.
“So instead of sitting there and saying, ‘Okay, we did something amazing,’ that’s what I do, too. I’m always thinking, ‘Okay, but tomorrow it could all be gone, so how can I make sure that doesn’t happen?'” she said.
Gomez said her “biggest struggle” is wrestling with this mindset when she experiences something “amazing.”
“I got married and I was sobbing because I thought, ‘I’m going to die the next day,'” she explained. “I think it’s the little things in life.”
The “Only Murders in the Building” star married Blanco, 37, in a beautiful ceremony at Sea Crest Nursery in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Sept. 27.
The bride, who has spoken candidly about her own mental health struggles, walked down the aisle wearing a custom lace dress by Ralph Lauren, while her groom said “yes” in a tuxedo from the same designer.
He also wore a diamond watch estimated to be worth $1 million.
Gomez wore two other dresses from the fashion house throughout the evening. She chose a draped satin dress before the ceremony and a tea-length dress for the reception.
Some of the couple’s A-list friends attended the wedding, including Taylor Swift, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Paul Rudd.
Swift, 35, also gave a speech at the reception, praising the former Disney star’s 2000s fashion choices.
Gomez and the music producer confirmed their relationship in December 2023.
A year later, Blanco proposed to the Rare Beauty founder with a marquise diamond ring. It’s a nod to their 2015 collaboration, “Good for You,” in which Gomez sings, “I wear marquise diamonds/I wear marquise diamonds/I could make that Tiffany jealous.”
Last week, Gomez hinted that she was ready to become parents with Blanco. She previously revealed that medical issues prevent her from having children of her own, but she is open to other options.
