Karol G was nominated for Best Latin Song at tonight’s MTV VMA, but the star didn’t appear at Elmont, New York’s ceremony. Instead, she made a big performance in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday, September 5th. Naturally, she chose not to make a trip to New York for one nomination that ultimately lost to Shakira.
The Colombian superstar is built on the momentum of her Manana Serra Bonito Stadium Tour, which has become the best Latin tour by female artists. The tour, which concluded in July 2024, is the focus of her Netflix documentary, Karol G: Tomorrow Was Beautiful, released earlier this year.
Reflecting on showing the unattractive aspects of success, she told USA Today in May, “There are so many ups and downs and “Oh, my God, I’m a leader.”
Karol’s current chapter is also highlighted by new music, as he recently released his fifth studio album, Tropicoqueta. The album blends the influences of Vallenato, Bachata, Merengue, Ranchera, Pop, Cumbia, and Reggaeton, bringing her first full English track, “Papasito.”
“I did my own translations myself because I wanted to sound faithful to the way I speak English,” she told Variety in June. “The story is about seeing this guy at a party and feeling instantly drawn to him… and perhaps because he’s American, I’m speaking my best English to make him fall in love with me.”
On Friday, Karol performed during the NFL season kickoff in Sao Paulo and found a halftime show during his first NFL live broadcast with the Los Angeles Chargers, YouTube’s first Kansas City Chiefs game. “I’ve seen many NFL halftime shows over the years, and now that I have this opportunity to bring my music to this global stage, it means the world to me,” she said in a statement.
