Ariana Grande is nominated for Best Actor (formerly known as the SAG Awards) for her role in Wicked: For Good, but the star won’t be returning to the red carpet tonight. A representative for the actress confirmed to ELLE that she was absent due to tour preparations and rehearsals. Grande’s Eternal Sunshine Tour begins June 6th.
Grande was nominated tonight for Best Supporting Female Actor for her second Wicked movie.
This two-part film marked Grande’s return to acting. She spoke to Variety in January about what surprised her most when she re-engaged with her art after years of focusing on her music career. (Grande started her career on Broadway’s 13 when she was a teenager and then appeared on the Nickelodeon show Victorious.)
“Even if you’ve been preparing for it for years, every time something goes well, there’s always a feeling of relief and gratitude afterwards,” she says. “You think, ‘Oh my god, I get it, we did it.'” You call your acting coach or your mom and say, “We did it.”
“That kind of feeling always happened on ‘Wicked,'” she continued. “Cynthia[Erivo, who plays Elphaba]and I joke, but it’s true. Every day was a big day. We started with ‘Popular’ and ‘What Is This Feeling?’ and then jumped right into ‘Defying Gravity.’ Before lunch I sang the beginning of the song in the attic, and after lunch I sang the finale alone. It was a non-stop mental hurdle. The response was so quick that we didn’t have time to process what had happened the day before or earlier in the day. The blindfold was working really well and I just stayed inside. But every time something landed, there was an overwhelming sense of relief. ”
