4 minute read‘Agatha All Along’ star Kathryn Hahn has been with her husband Ethan Sandler for 30 years, and they look adorable together on almost every red carpet.
But despite her life in the spotlight, Hearn insists her home life is pretty normal.
“I live a very normal life,” she told Parade magazine in October 2018. “I have beautiful children, a forever husband, two dogs, a rabbit, and now a hamster. We’re becoming more and more animal people. So I live a rich, creative life, but I also have a normal life, and I’m able to keep the two separate and sacred.”
Part of the reason they’re a bit of a mystery is that Hearn isn’t actually active on social media, but actress Kate Hudson did post a selfie on her timeline from a trip to Greece in June 2021.
Here’s what is known about Sandler’s long and loving relationship with Hearn.
Who is Ethan Sandler?
Sandler also began acting when he was still a teenager, appearing in films such as The Chocolate War, A Seal-Take Romance, and The Spies. He attended Northwestern University, where he met Hahn.
They then lived together in New York City and went to various auditions. She told Northwestern Magazine about their early days together in a very, very small apartment with one small sink for everything in Hell’s Kitchen.
“I would take a shower with the door open,” Hearn joked. “I always said to Ethan, ‘Hey, when you shave, rinse your hair before you wash the dishes.'”
She said they spent time auditioning for “Off Off Off Off Off Broadway shows.”
“It was a great time,” Hahn said. “I loved it. Everything about it. It was pretty heinous, but we just didn’t know because we were young.”
The two eventually co-starred in the crime drama Crossing Jordan, where Hahn played a major role as Lily Lebowski from 2001 to 2007. Sandler was cast in 2002 to play Lily’s boyfriend, ADA Jeffrey Brando. On the show, the two were married, and Hearn was actually pregnant in real life, which became part of the series.
Sandler continued to work behind the camera as an executive producer and writer on New Girl, Man with a Plan, My Boys, and Whitney.

The two met as undergraduates at Northwestern University, graduated in 1995, and soon moved in together.

The two dated for about 10 years before getting married in 2002. Hearn doesn’t talk much about their relationship, but in 2021 he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The virtual appearance also included a cameo from Sandler, who Hahn insisted was welcome. After failing once, she succeeded!
In November 2025, Hahn appeared on Gwyneth Paltrow’s The goop podcast and revealed that there were ups and downs over the course of her relationship with Sandler.
“I remember someone saying that we’ve been married for 30 years (and) about five years and we’re still doing great,” she added. “We just extended it to our 30s, so it always makes me feel better. It’s like, ‘Great. Maybe we’re halfway through a five-year shitty period.'”

The couple has two children, son Leonard and daughter Mae. She told People that when she first appeared on WandaVision, there was a funny reaction to the popularity of her character, Agatha.
“I don’t think anyone would seriously consider their mothers cool, and I understand that and respect that, but they were definitely a little bit suspiciously kind to me,” Hahn said. “So I’d like to take that as a big compliment. They’re definitely proud.”
Hahn revealed about Leonard going to college on The Drew Barrymore Show in May 2025. “I’m trying to shed all my tears right now and be genuinely happy when he’s gone,” she said at the time. “But now I’m confused. I think I’m always in the parenting stage and can’t imagine life after that.”
The actress later revealed that having Sandler by her side provided emotional support after Leonard left home. “All of a sudden, when someone leaves home and goes to college, you really realize how grateful you are to have someone to watch you grow old with,” she said during an appearance on The goop Podcast. “It was such a sweet and tender feeling for our son to come out of the house…because no one understands that better than us.”
Do they have pets?
Hahn and Sandler have a dog named Banjo. The couple also act as foster parents for kittens, and their daughter persuaded them to become foster parents.
“We are currently fostering kittens,” Hahn told W in 2020. “This is our third kitten. My 11-year-old daughter convinced me that it’s a good thing to do because there are a lot of shelters that need help. But when you walk into my guest room, sure, it’s a city of urine right now. But it’s so cute. And it’s all on her and it’s all her responsibility. I’m so proud of that lady.”
During an April 2025 appearance on Good Hang with Amy Poehler, she spoke passionately about Banjo and his quirky personality traits.
“My dog gets really irritated,” Hahn said in the podcast episode. “He’s really stupid, very mongrel, his tail is always up very high, and he’s a very aggressive asshole. Everything he does is so stupid that it makes me laugh out loud. He’s a dingo.”
