Felicity Jones and Charles Gard have been balancing their personal partnership and creative pursuits for several years. Jones, an Oscar-nominated star known for films such as The Brutalist, The Theory of Everything and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, met Gard, a prolific British filmmaker, 10 years ago. Gard comes from a creative family and started making films at an early age.
Gard is a director and producer, best known for his work as one half of the Gard Brothers, a directorial duo he formed with his brother Thomas. Their father, Howard Gard, is a well-known director of documentaries such as Inside Eton (1995) and A County at War: Life on the Home Front in Hertfordshire (2014). Howard also directed the music video for British gothic rock band Bauhaus’ 1982 song “She’s in Parties.”
In a 2023 interview with MovieMaker, Gard and his brother opened up about their early interest in entertainment. “We started making movies when we were kids playing around with video cameras and my brother’s friends,” Thomas said. He added that their collaboration “started in earnest when we were in college.”
According to Collider, the pair studied together at Cambridge University and joined the school’s comedy group, the Cambridge Footlights. At the time, the group included comedians David Mitchell, Robert Webb, and The Crown actress Olivia Colman, who starred in the brothers’ first short film, One Color White.
He has extensive experience in both film and commercial work.
According to a profile of the Gard brothers on talent agency United Agents, they directed a trilogy of short films early in their careers. One of them was titled Inside Out (1999) and starred Lena Headey and Simon McBurney. They then wrote and directed another short film, Round About Five, featuring Headey, Martin Freeman, and Jodhi May.
Gard and his brother made their feature debut in 2009’s The Uninvited, starring Emily Browning, Elizabeth Banks, Ariel Kebbell, and David Strathairn. Most recently, he directed the 2023 action thriller Dead Shot, starring Jones, Amr Amin, Colin Morgan, and Mark Strong.
Speaking to Collider in August 2023, Gard revealed that Jones initially joined the project as an executive producer before taking on the role of a woman named Katherine in the 1970s-set film.
“We knew the story was essentially driven by these two male protagonists, so it was great to be able to talk about Katherine’s character and how we could get the most out of her,” Gard said. “But it was very important to us that we could make a movie in the ’70s way, where the characters were intriguing even if we didn’t spend enough time with them on screen.”

Gard and Thomas have also shot commercials and have signed a deal with production company Merman to continue working in advertising in 2024. Earlier this month, internet provider Kinetic released a spot helmed by the duo. According to their portfolio on Merman’s website, they have also directed commercials for Hyundai, Audi, and LG.

In an interview with Net-a-Porter, Jones revealed that she and Gard first passed each other in a Los Angeles hotel elevator while promoting their 2014 film The Theory of Everything. Meanwhile, Gard was in the city working on a commercial. She joked that their meeting was “a very Hollywood love story between two Brits”. She added, “I met him many times at the Sunset Tower Hotel. I would go once and come back two weeks later and he would still be there. Eventually, we started chatting.” The two started dating around 2015 and got engaged in May 2017.
The two got married at the castle in June 2018.
On June 30, 2018, Jones and Guard tied the knot at Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, England, in a low-key ceremony attended by A-listers such as Tom Hanks and Eddie Redmayne. For her wedding look, Jones wore a custom couture dress by Erdem, Vanity Fair reported at the time.

They have two children, but their family life is mostly out of the spotlight.
Since their wedding, Jones and Guard have quietly welcomed two children together. A son was born in April 2020, and a daughter was born in 2022. Although she has kept details of her family life private, Jones gave a peek into her motherhood schedule in December 2024, telling People magazine: I might be able to wake up by 4:30 a.m. the next day. ”
In an interview with the Guardian in January 2025, Jones also spoke about the sense of responsibility she and Guard feel as parents. “I always think about raising kids, and what I think about is, we can’t mess up, we have to do everything perfectly, or our children are going to hate us for the rest of our lives,” she said. “Preserving the anarchy and innocence of childhood is very difficult today.”
