rundown
Kristen Wiig and her husband Avi Rothman first started dating in 2016 and gave birth to twins via surrogate in January 2020. Rothman is an actor who has appeared in “Barb and Star,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” and “Silver Lake.”
Comedian and former Saturday Night Live star Kristen Wiig always kept her love life very quiet, even after she met the man she later married and had two children with. She and husband Avi Rossman were first reported to be dating in 2016, but they never announced an engagement or even marriage after both of those things happened.
But over the years, a few hints about their love have been dropped here and there. Additionally, since they both work in the entertainment industry, it was inevitable that they would be spotted in public. Here’s what we know so far about Rothman’s romance with Wiig.
Who is Avi Rothman?
Rothman is also an actor and comedian, and is also credited as a screenwriter and producer. Like Wiig, he trained at Los Angeles’ famous improv school The Groundlings. His film debut was in the 2009 comedy Slammin’ Salmon, produced by Broken Lizard, and he went on to appear in Silver Lake (2018), Blackout (2019), Swimming with Stephen (2020), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021). The latter two were films starring Wiig, and she co-wrote Barb & Star.
Rothman has numerous credits as a writer and producer for films and television series. His short film “Bunion” premiered at the 2015 Wildsound Film Festival.
“I really want to finish writing and shoot a feature,” he told WILDsound Festival Review at the time. Before starring in movies, Rothman appeared in a number of viral videos on YouTube, including the 2006 video “Ogden the Inprofit Yoga Guy.”
This titular character was a hit and he created several more clips as him. In a 2010 interview with The Laugh Button, Rothman explained that she is actually into yoga, if not inappropriate.
“About seven years ago, my sister introduced me to yoga. At one point, I became addicted and was going to classes five times a week,” he said. “I’m always quiet in class and don’t say much about myself.”
He added, “I love people-watching. Sometimes I thought there were a lot of characters in my yoga class. There were a lot of men openly courting women and trying to pick them up, and vice versa.”
My pursuit of web comedy fame was inspired by a friend of mine who was studying online marketing in business school. They decided to see if they could intentionally spread the virus.
“We basically came up with the idea of making a pseudo-commercial for American Apparel where everyone gets naked and makes breakfast,” he explained. “I think it had over 150,000 hits in two days. …I think it would have had more hits, except for the fact that it was marked as ‘adult content.'”
Rothman continued, “I think this video helped us understand how accessible it would be to viewers if it actually went viral.”
How long have Wiig and Rothman been together?
In May 2016, the two were spotted looking very affectionate on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, sparking rumors that they were dating. Wiig was spotted wearing a ring at a screening of Booksmart, and by August 2019, People magazine confirmed the pair were engaged.
The couple gave birth to twins through a surrogate in January 2020, but have not yet announced their marriage. In February 2021, Wiig referred to Rothman as her “husband” in an interview on The Howard Stern Show.
“Besides the fact that we’re where we are, it’s hard not to feel the hard work and struggle that’s going on right now. In my home, I’m so lucky to have these two babies and my husband. It’s changed my life,” Wiig said.
do they have children?
Their twins were born in January 2020, but it wasn’t until June of the same year that they shared new family status. Although they did not reveal their names, the credits for Barb and Star include a “special thanks” to the children in the film’s acknowledgments, including a line of thanks to “Luna and Shiloh.”
In August 2020, Wiig spoke to InStyle about how she struggled with infertility and tried IVF with Rothman before turning to surrogacy.
“We were together for about five years, and three of those years were spent in the limbo (of IVF),” she said. “Emotionally, mentally, medically, it was probably the most difficult time of my life. I wasn’t myself.”
She continued, “I finally realized that I just needed help. And thank God, we were able to find the most amazing surrogate mother.”
In March 2024, she told The Hollywood Reporter about surrogacy, “It’s part of my story, it’s part of how I ended up with a wonderful family.”
When was the last time Wiig and Rothman appeared in public?
On September 24, 2024, Wiig and Rothman attended an afterparty for a screening of Wiig’s film Will & Harper in New York.
What has Wiig been saying about Rothman and their kids lately?
In September 2025, Wiig spoke candidly about her family when asked why she decided to star in Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie.
“My kids are almost 6 years old and they don’t watch much TV,” she told People. “Also, it’s difficult because there are some shows that we want our kids to watch more than others, but it was an easy ‘yes’ for my husband and I because of the nature of the show, how sweet it was, how it interacted with the kids, and the way she spoke to the camera. Ever since this show came into our house, it’s been full of Gabby. They’re just hooked.”
Wiig also revealed that her twin is voicing a character in the film.
“They’re playing Hopper and Bopper, these two little cats,” she said. “They were just laughing and jumping up and down and squealing and saying things in unison, and it was really cute to see them in their little booth with their headphones on, because they didn’t really know what was going on, and they were so hilarious.”
