Actress Wendi McLendon-Covey is being uniquely candid about why she didn’t attend Sunday’s “Bridesmaids” reunion during a live Academy Awards broadcast.
“I got a neck lift last week because I was tired of looking like a melted candle. So I had to miss the Academy Awards. No drama. Everything is fine,” the actress and comedian posted on Instagram Sunday night. She said she made the remarks in response to a flood of questions in her direct messages. The post included a close-up photo of McClendon-Covey’s face with what appeared to be medical tape wrapped around her head and under her chin.
The “Bridesmaids” corner brought together the stars of Paul Feig’s 2011 comedy, including Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne and Ellie Kemper, making it a cozy corner during the Oscars telecast.
McClendon-Covey, known for starring in the NBC comedy “St. Denis Medical” and playing the matriarch on ABC’s long-running comedy “The Goldbergs,” would have been a natural addition to the ensemble assembled at this time. McClendon-Covey ended her Instagram post with an emoji of a happy face blowing a kiss.
Replies to the post included one from St. Denis Medical co-star Alison Tolman. Ms Tolman wrote: “Congratulations, the Queen. Can’t wait to meet her. (neck).” Former “Saturday Night Live” star Cheri Oteri cheered McClendon-Covey, calling her “a rock star anytime and anywhere.”
“Bridesmaids” was a raunchy comedy hit for Feig and producer Judd Apatow. This helped push the boundaries for female-oriented adult comedies at the box office.
