The acting awards, formerly known as the SAG Awards, are known for hosting on-stage cast reunions with presenters, including The Devil Wears Prada’s Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt in 2024, and Gossip Girl’s Kristen Bell and Leighton Meester in 2025. This year’s awards show featured appearances from The Office’s leading ladies, Mindy Kaling, Jenna Fischer, and Angela. Kinsey and Ellie Kemper will be on stage together. The group brought back the character dynamic in presenting the studio with the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
The actresses reminisced about the days when sitcoms had 22 episodes each season. “I didn’t plan my season with pregnancy in mind,” Kemper said. “Yeah, you just gave birth in front of the cameras and named your baby after Grip,” Kaling added.
Kinsey and Fisher host the Office Ladies Podcast, which rewatches episodes of the hit sitcom. Meanwhile, Kaling reflected on what it was like for younger generations to discover the show in an interview with Variety last February.
“It was really lovely to see,” she said. “I feel like between my books and my TV show, a lot of the people who are interested in my story are young women, young women of color, women my age. The great thing about ‘The Office’ is that it includes those people, but it’s a whole different set of fans who come up to me at the airport. A 15-year-old kid would be like, ‘Hey, it’s Kelly from The Office!'” They love the show, and it’s so genuine. ”
“When I started working, the first thing I thought about what I wanted to write was a story about an ambitious woman living in a city with disposable income,” she continued. “But instead, I was writing for these 12 people in an office in Scranton, Pennsylvania. You know the old saying, ‘You can’t always get what you want, but you can get what you need.'” That’s what I needed, to learn how to write to reflect the voices of people who were very different from me. ”
She recalled being a 24-year-old writer on the show, saying, “The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I was to have that job. It was my first job working on an Off-Off-Broadway stage. I wasn’t even on the WGA; I didn’t even have health insurance. So I was very excited to just have the basic needs that I had to meet. But then I worked on the show for eight years and the idea came to me to focus (deep dive) on comedy writing and comedy.” Being an actor, being around Steve Carell, Greg Daniels, BJ Novak, Mike Schull and learning from them over the years…I felt incredibly lucky because my bar was so low at the time. Learning how to write and act with some really great people who are still friends to this day completely built my career. ”
