Victoria Beckham has revealed new details about her “incredibly unhealthy” past eating disorder, which she said left her with “no sense of reality” after the Spice Girls split in 2000.
“When you have an eating disorder, you’re very good at lying. I couldn’t be honest with my parents about it,” she says in Netflix’s new documentary series “Victoria Beckham.”
“I’ve never talked about it publicly. Being constantly told that you’re not good enough really affects me. I think that’s something that’s probably been going on my whole life.”
The Spice Girl member known as Posh Spice, 51, admitted that she is stung by the constant criticism surrounding her body.
“I was everything from Porky Posh to Skinny Posh,” she says in the doc. “I mean, I think it was hard, but it was hard. I couldn’t control what was written about me or what pictures were taken of me. I think I wanted to control that. I wanted to control with my clothes.”
“I was able to control my weight, and I was controlling it in an incredibly unhealthy way,” she continues.
Victoria told national television in 1999 that she was weighed six months after giving birth to her first child, Brooklyn Beckham, 26, with husband David Beckham.
“When we’re on TV, we laugh and joke about it,” she says. “But it hurt because I was really, really young.”
David added that back then, “people felt it was okay to criticize women’s weight…There was a lot of stuff going on on TV back then, but it wouldn’t happen now, it can’t happen now.”
Victoria explains that she began to “doubt herself and not like herself” and gradually began to “lose sense of reality”.
Body dysmorphic disorder began to develop, and the “Wannabe” singer “became very critical of himself. I didn’t like what I saw.”
Sources previously confirmed to Page Six that Victoria will talk about her struggles with body image and food in the new series.
“Victoria’s appearance and weight have been under intense scrutiny,” the source said. “I think the audience will kind of understand what she went through.”
The former pop star opened up about her struggles for the first time in her autobiography, “Learning to Fly.”
Although she now has a healthy relationship with food, there is one thing she still avoids.
When David asked her if she wanted chocolate, she scoffed, “I haven’t touched chocolate since the ’90s.” “I’m not going to start now.”
“Victoria Beckham,” which premieres Thursday on Netflix, follows singer-turned-designer Victoria Beckham as she prepares for a fashion show in Paris, reflecting on her life and featuring interviews with Anna Wintour, Eva Longoria, Tom Ford, Donatella Versace and more.
In 2023, Netflix streamed a documentary series exploring David Beckham’s professional and personal life.
