Venom, the claw-toothed symbiote that became Spider-Man’s favorite villain, will appear in an animated film from Bloodlines director Zack Lipofsky and Adam B. Stine.
Tom Hardy, who played Eddie Brock’s fanged counterpart in the three live-action Venom films, will be joining the project, studio officials said. However, it is unclear whether he will be voicing the character this time around or playing another role. This project is in the early stages of development, so many things are subject to change. Although critics more or less hated the “Venom” series, the films were a huge hit, grossing over $1.8 billion worldwide in total.
Given the subject matter and the filmmaker’s background, this project doesn’t seem particularly child-friendly. Sony Pictures, which controls the rights to Venom through a licensing agreement with Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, will produce the film through Sony Pictures Animation. Previous animated web spinner adventures such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have scored points in this category. The third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2027.
Lipovsky and Stein gained Hollywood attention with the success of Final Destination: Bloodline, which revitalized the horror franchise and earned $317.9 million. The two are set to co-write the screenplay for Gremlins 3 with Steven Spielberg as executive producer and director and producer Chris Columbus. The film is scheduled to be released in 2027.
Lipovsky and Stein are repped by Verve, Ground Control and Richter Grossman. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news about the animated film “Venom.”
