Uma Thurman built an A-list career without putting down roots in Hollywood, but the actress exclusively tells InStyle that missing out on Los Angeles may have cost her a deeper connection to the industry.
Despite cementing her status as an A-list actress and action star with Kill Bill, Thurman chose to remain rooted in New York.
“Actually, I always thought I should have moved to Los Angeles,” she admitted in the cover interview.
At one point, the actress almost moved west, as her Hollywood career continued to draw her to California.
“I worked there so often that I even managed to get an apartment at some point. As soon as I signed the lease, I got pregnant with my daughter within about six weeks.”
Instead of settling in Los Angeles, Thurman changed direction, choosing family over proximity to Hollywood.
But Thurman added that while the decision was pragmatic, it also came with tradeoffs.
“I’ve never been in Los Angeles, so I haven’t been able to integrate into my professional community, and I think that’s too bad,” she continued.
Rather than forging connections within Hollywood circles, Thurman found a sense of community much closer to home.
“We had more community with other moms at the 16th Street and Rutherford Place pick-ups, which is fine. But I wish we had that chapter. I think I would have really liked it.”
Still, Thurman makes it clear he has no intention of dwelling on the missed opportunity.
“I think the choice to be happy should be made no matter the circumstances,” she said.
Thurman was previously married to actor Ethan Hawke. The two met while filming Gattaca in 1997.
Thurman filed for divorce from Hawk in 2004 after several years of separation.
The couple married in 1998 and their divorce was finalized in 2005. They have two children, Maya and Levon.
Thurman and Hawk have both moved on to new relationships after their divorce.
Hawk married Ryan Shawhughes in 2008 and they have two daughters, Clementine and Indiana.
Thurman dated Arpad Busson and they got engaged in 2008 before breaking up in 2009. The two continued on and off, but broke up for good in 2014. In 2012, their daughter Luna was born.
