Rome-based TVCO has acquired worldwide distribution rights, excluding Latin America, to Chile’s Rio Estudios’ high-concept science fiction series “Hidden Island” (“Isla oculta”).
“TVCO’s long track record in the European market gives us great confidence in successfully positioning the series in diverse markets,” said showrunner Pablo Díaz del Rios, adding that his company Rio Estudios will handle sales in Latin America.
“Hidden Island” is one of 17 scripted series participating in the Berlinale Series Market Select and is scheduled for screening on February 16th.
Set in Southern Patagonia, this six-part series follows strong-willed detective Fabiola as she investigates the disappearance of a Mexican archeology student who disappeared in search of the mythical Friendship Island. As the case deepens, Fabiola must decide whether it is a complete kidnapping or something more unusual. Reports about the island warn of strange disappearances, miraculous healings, and the possibility of extraterrestrial activity.
“This series offers a compelling blend of thriller and mystery, underpinned by a strong female protagonist and a strong narrative identity. We strongly believe that ‘Hidden Island’ has all the ingredients to resonate with broadcasters and platforms around the world, and the European Film Market in Berlin will be the ideal launching pad for its international journey,” said Simonetta Polese, Head of Sales at TVCO.
The series brings together top Chilean talent, led by star Daniela Ramirez, who was nominated for an International Emmy Award for her performance in the HBO Max limited series Isabel: The Intimate Story of Isabel Allende.
Screenwriters include Julio Rojas, known for his popular podcast series Case 63, along with Felipe Carmona (Andean Prison) and Juan M. Daltizio (The Unknown Enemy). Rodrigo Susarte, known for “Gen Mishima” and “Invanche,” directed all six episodes.
Diaz said in a previous interview, “I think we were able to make a more philosophical, more existential series without falling into clichés and with a nod to science fiction.” “We didn’t have the budget to make Interstellar or Arrival, but given the resources we had, I think we were able to keep a lot of it.”
“Let’s say this series is ultimately going to be about artificial intelligence and humanity, what humanity is going through in modern times. Fabiola will feel that as a kind of premonition and have a vision for the second season, which will happen in 2028,” he added.
‘Hidden Island’ competes for the Studio Babelsberg Production Excellence Award, newly introduced to the Berlin Series Market, which recognizes outstanding production quality, including creative vision, execution, innovative approach and strong international appeal.
