Malaysian-born Taiwanese director Tsai Ming Liang, who won the Venice Golden Lion for “Vive L’Amour,” will be filming a series of “Walker” films at the 29th Ji.hlava Film Festival (October 24th to November 2nd), and will film his next film.
Tsai won the Special Jue Award in Berlin in 1997 for “The River” and in 2005 he won the Berlin Silver Bear and the Alfrimbauer Award for “The Wayward Cloud.” He competed for the “hole” at Cannes in 1998. “What time is it?” In 2001 and 2009, he said, “Face.”
Tsai won the Ji.hlava award last year for his contributions to the film.
“I am pleased that last year’s visit to the festival encouraged him to shoot the film for the acclaimed series,” said Marek Hovorka, director of Ji.hlava.
The film is made during the festival in collaboration with students from the Prague Film School who work in key positions as part of their mentoring programme. The post-production will be held at FAMU Studios, and the completed film will premiere at the festival on November 1st.
The film will be financially supported by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture.
The “Walker” series, which began in 2012, features Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-Sheng as a monk who travels through various urban environments at a very slow pace, creating a meditative contrast between ancient spiritual practices and modern environments.
“The “Walker” films are a call to slow down, stop, change our perception. They are the antithesis of today’s digital civilization,” said Hovlka.
