Trump booed in the Open Men’s Final Tennis Match

President Donald Trump returned to Queens, the New York City Borough, where he grew up, and he received Bronx cheers from the crowd for the US Open Men’s Final Sunday.

When Trump was briefly shown at the Jumbotron at Arthur Ash Stadium during the US anthem – the president salutes – fans responded with a boo-audio cascade, as heard on ABC’s television broadcast. Some attendees applauded, according to journalist Ben Rotenberg. It came before the start of the championship match on the men’s side.

ESPN is broadcasting the US Open Men’s Final nationwide on ABC, airing crowd reactions to Trump. It demanded that the United States Tennis Association be censored “confusion or reaction” in response to Trump after sending a note to its media partners. “We ask all broadcasters to refrain from introducing confusion or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity,” the USTA said in a memo. Trump is taking part in the event as a Rolex guest in a private suite of luxury watchmakers, as originally reported on the Bountenis Blog.

The Sinner-Alcaraz match was scheduled to start shortly after 2pm, but official start times were pushed back after 30 minutes due to delays in traffic and additional security screening procedures in which Trump attendees were set up. The championship match finally progressed around 2:48pm, but ESPN reports showed a long line of people waiting to enter the stadium.

Trump’s recent appearance at the US Open came in 2015 when he was a candidate competing for the president’s Republican nomination.

ESPN’s exclusive coverage of the 2025 US Open Tennis Tournament will end Sunday with the men’s championships on ABC, ESPN Deportes and the ESPN streaming app. Coverage began at 1pm and began with ABC’s preview special.

Trump draws some boos and some applause when it is shown to salute during the national anthem. (No one else paid tribute to the national anthem).

The stadium is still half empty due to the long security line.
