During a recent Q&A with Robert Downey Jr. at New York’s DGA Theater, Timothée Chalamet revealed that he was threatened by a background actor while filming a scene for Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme.
“I won’t say who, but there are a lot of people in that motel scene who aren’t actors…I think it’s really thrilling to work with them, but sometimes it takes a lot of takes to really get something out of them,” Chalamet said (via People). “And I’m really getting in the guy’s face and trying to get him mad at me. I said to Josh, ‘He’s not mad at me. He’s not mad at me.’
The Oscar-nominated actor thought he wouldn’t get a raise from an unknown extra, but he was wrong.
“We did another take and the guy said, ‘I just spent 30 years in prison. You really don’t want to have sex with me. You don’t want to see me mad,'” Chalamet said with a nervous laugh. “I said to Josh, ‘Oh my god, who’s my opponent?’
Chalamet will star in Safdie’s sports drama as Marty Moser, who chases his dream of becoming a table tennis champion. “Marty Supreme” is a fictionalized version of the real-life Marty Reisman, who won five world championship medals in table tennis.
Chalamet is a front-runner for an Oscar for his performance in Marty Supreme, and has already won honors at the Broadcast Critics Association Awards and Golden Globe Awards. He also received an Best Actor nomination from SAG.
In his acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards, Chalamet said, “My father instilled in me a spirit of gratitude while growing up: “Always be grateful for what you have.” Because of that, I have been able to leave ceremonies empty-handed in the past, grateful for being here. But I’d be lying if I said those moments didn’t make this moment any less sweet. ”
