Timothee Chalamet has some explaining to do. In recent weeks, the Oscar nominee has raised eyebrows in Hollywood with his unconventional press tour for Marty Supreme. Although some promotional elements were adopted (for example, a parody of A24’s marketing meeting replaced by the orange blimp Marty Supreme), Chalamet’s interview proved to be far more divisive.
In an interview that went viral on social media, Chalamet told reporters that “Marty Supreme” was his best acting role after giving “superlative performances” in the past “seven or eight years.” He added: “I don’t want people to take it for granted. I don’t want people to take it for granted. This is really top level shit.”
Chalamet then appeared on Good Morning America and made vague comments about the film’s potential success, which many on social media interpreted as predicting Chalamet would win an Oscar for Marty Supreme in the new year.
“I want the movie to be successful. I want everything to be a win,” Chalamet said. “The real truth is, it’s ‘Marty Supreme.’ I’m sure we’ll know what it will be by next summer.”
Whatever Chalamet’s intentions were on the press tour, many fans on social media were a little uncomfortable with his brash attitude. Chalamet recently told IndieWire that all of his press tours have been consistent with the energy of “Marty Supreme.”
Asked about the press tour, Chalamet said, “This is in the spirit of Marty, and I feel like it’s ultimately an original movie at a time when not many original movies have been released.” “This is a movie about pursuing a dream, and I’m leaving it on the field. Whether it’s merchandise, Zoom, or media appearances, I’m trying to convey this in the biggest way possible. In the spirit of Marty Moser.”
Love it or hate it, Chalamet’s Marty Supreme press tour seems to be going well so far. The film was released on six screens on December 19th and grossed a whopping $875,000 over its opening weekend, giving it the highest screen average (PSA) of the year ($145,933 per theater). This is A24’s largest PSA in history, and the highest PSA for a film released on the platform since 2016’s box office hit “La La Land.” The film will be released nationwide on Christmas Day.
