The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards highlighted the biggest and bold show of the year, and the night itself was filled with unpredictable fun. “Retirement” and “White Lotus” were tied for major nominations that went into the 10 evenings, but Nate’s Burgazze host’s night had plenty of snubs and surprises.
Surprising: Despite tying the night’s most nominations, “The White Lotus” won nothing.
One of the most blessed shows of the year could not defeat competitions like “retirement” or “pits.”
Surprise: Awarding the first prize of the evening before a monologue
It was fun to see Seth Rogen bring home his first statue between the opening sketch and Bargatze’s monologue. The moments that take off quilters slowly help keep things moving.
Surprise: Katherine Lanatha wins when the bustling women of “White Lotus” cancel each other to support the actress in a drama series
Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell and Amy Lou Wood have had four most discussed roles on television this season. “Pits” is certainly a cultural phenomenon, but it’s hard to imagine that women didn’t split enough votes to open Lanatha’s lanes.
Snub: No show clips displayed
One of the most enjoyable parts of an award show is sampling some acting, scores, or even those big moments that give you a goose bump without having to watch the show. Losing those bits is a real loss.
Snub: Kathy Bates left empty-handed
Between her buzzing work on “Matt Rock” and a career full of roles worth celebrating, Bates looked like Shu-in, the drama series’ standout lead actress. But Britt Lower’s powerful work on Buzzy’s “retirement” felt like a race between chic streamers and network stubborns.
Surprise: Jeff Hiller wins big
The least known candidate for the evening from one of the shows with the least audience created a pleasant moment as he earned excellent history with outstanding support actors in the comedy series. His fascinating acceptance speech has earned him even more fans, as well as those interested in checking out “someone is where.”
Snub: Pronounce people’s names correctly
From presenter Jason Bateman’s Miss Ponouncing winner Tramell Tillman to Belgatze, who trips over the names of Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman for musical performances, it wasn’t a great evening for general courtesy.
Snub: Presenter Elizabeth Banks celebrates female directors…just because men win
Banks spent most of her time awarding awards for a limited series director and commending the fact that five out of six nominees are women. However, in an unfortunate moment of timing, “adolescent” helmer Philip Balantini won.
Snub: Colin Farrell failed to cross the “Penguin” finish line
Despite his marquee name, strong campaign and co-star Christine Milioti returning the winner home, Farrell failed to beat “adolescent” Juggernaut Steven Glaham.
Surprise: Bargatze’s lack of rehearsal
For the timing-based stand-up comedian, Bergazze stumbled over night jokes and observations, leading to the night’s biggest “huh”; Certainly, I left a slack split from the variety newsroom. This is not a sign of a sterling bit.
