The X-Men are officially back in live-action cinema.
A third teaser for Avengers: Doomsday, which played before the screening of Avatar: Fire and Ashes, has been released online, showing the return of Fox’s X-Men characters Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Cyclops (James Marsden).
The trio rose to fame as superheroes in Fox’s X-Men trilogy in the early 2000s, and later co-starred with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who entered the MCU in Deadpool and Wolverine. Stewart also briefly returned in Doctor Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness, playing Xavier from another dimension who was promptly killed by Scarlet Witch. The trio also had a cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but this winter’s Avengers: Doomsday will mark the first time they’ll be seen alongside the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and many other heroes.
The teaser begins by showing Xavier’s abandoned school for gifted youth that the X-Men called home. Magneto says ominously, “Death comes to everyone. That’s all I know for sure. The question is not, ‘Are you ready to die?'” The question is, “Who would you be if you closed your eyes?” “is. ”
After showing off Xavier’s wheelchair and floating chess pieces, the two antagonists reunite, reminiscent of the ending of X-Men: The Last Stand, where Magneto attempts to regain his electromagnetic powers while playing chess. A shaggy-haired Magneto embraces Xavier, but then the teaser takes a dramatic turn, showing a distraught Cyclops firing a giant red beam of energy from his visor. This is a show of force from Cyclops’ previous “X-Men” films, and perhaps indicates that he will play a more central role in the team’s “Apocalypse” adventure. We also see giant legs wriggling in the distance, which could be Sentinel, a giant mutant-hunting robot that is one of the X-Men’s most iconic villains.
In addition to Stewart, McKellen and Marsden, Doomsday stars Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique. They will also meet Avengers characters such as Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Simu Liu. The mega-team will also include Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach from the Fantastic Four, as well as the antihero Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, and Louis Pullman from the Thunderbolts.
