“The Studio,” which just won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical TV Series, returns in front of cameras next week. Those are the words of series star and executive producer Seth Rogen, speaking to reporters backstage at Sunday’s Kudocast.
Season 1, Episode 8 took place at the Golden Globes, so things got a little surreal for Rogen and co during Sunday night’s actual show, as the show won multiple awards. Rogen also hinted at the possibility of a return to the Globes in season 2, noting that some of the events that happened that night at the Beverly Hilton could even provide inspiration for what happens in season 2.
“As we’ve been writing the show, we’ve literally written episodes of some of the things that happened leading up to this awards ceremony. We’ll start filming in a week,” he said. “Yes, several things have happened leading up to today and this event. It’s written right into the show. Maybe when you watch it you’ll know what it is.”
Rogen said it could include cameos by people who approached him during the Globes and pitched him for season 2.
“A lot of people literally came up to us and were like, ‘Please put me on your show. I’ll do anything. I’ll pass!'” Rogen said. “That’s really cool. The head of Sony, Tom[Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Pictures Group]. I’m so happy that the head of a real studio wants to be on the show.”
Executives were probably inspired by the appearance of Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos in Season 1, saying, “Ted ruined everyone. But yeah, we tied up some people tonight. This is a great poaching ground for us.”
In addition to winning Best Comedy/Musical Series, Rogen also won Best Actor in a Television Comedy. It came a few months after “The Studio” Groves’ episode, which brought together actors like Jean Smart and Adam Scott, in addition to Sarandos, to play evicted versions of themselves.
“This is so weird. We were just pretending we were doing this, and now it’s happening!” Rogen said while clutching his Golden Globe Award. “I thought the only way I was going to get that was to make a show that gave me a fake version of that.”
The Globe win comes after “The Studio” also cleaned up at last September’s Emmy Awards, where the show made Emmy history by winning 13 Emmys, breaking the record for most wins for a comedy series. Rogen also tied the record for the most Emmy Awards won by an individual in one night.
“The Studio” filmed its first season in Los Angeles and received $13.2 million in California tax credits for its second season as well. Previous reports had suggested that production could begin in December; With a January start date, it’s still unclear when “The Studio” will return to Apple TV for season 2 (season 1 aired from March to May 2025).
“The Studio” stars Rogen, Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz and Chase Sui Wonders. Executive producers include Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, Josh Fagen, Alex Gregory, and Peter Huyck.
“The Studio” was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards this year. In addition to Rogen winning Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and the series winning Best Television Musical or Comedy, O’Hara was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
