New Zealand-based Black Mandala has acquired international sales rights to Manu Herrera’s Spanish horror feature, “Lily’s Ritual,” which will mark the world premiere at Grimmfest in Manchester, England.
“Lily’s Ritual” shows a return to practical effect-driven horror, utilizing prosthetic makeup and traditional FX techniques in about 90% of the film. This approach was directed by Pedro De Diego, one of Spain’s leading prosthetic makeup artists.
Set during the fall of 1999 Equinox, the film follows four friends who are gathered in an isolated cabin to make the start of magic. Lily, played by Maggie Garcia in her first major film role, is chosen to represent the element of air. The ritual makes a dark turn when Lily discovers that it is actually intended as a sacrifice to the demon Lilith.
The cast also includes Patricia Penjaber as Coven’s head Laura. British actress Eve Ryan is Laura. Elena Garraldo as Leo. and YouTuber Mike Fajardo as Adam, the only male character in the film. Fajardo has a significant social media following with over 12 million followers across the platform.
Herrera co-written the script with Javier Fernandez Moratara. The technical team includes cinematography director Felipe Alba, sound designer Fernando Pocostales (ondas award winner of 2023), composer Joan Martrell and production designer Marina Viencini. Jorge Redondo is executive producer of the Room Film and Chukumi Studios, and is associate producers Nicholas Onetti and Michael Kretzer.
The production has developed a transmedia strategy that will expand the film’s reach beyond theatrical releases, including a comic book drawn by Paco de La Fuente (El Habitante), which is expected to coincide with the film’s premiere. The project also includes a horror-themed podcast centered around Lilith’s characters.
The 17th edition of Grimmfest will be held from October 9th to 12th.
