D’OH! Homer, Marge, Burt, Lisa and Maggie return to the big screen after 20 years of rest.
The sequel to “The Simpsons Movie” will officially be held in Disney’s 20th century and will be released in theaters on July 23, 2027. The film replaced the untitled Marvel Project, which was removed from the studio’s schedule. As for Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, there will be no new comic book installments between “Avengers: Doomsday” on December 18, 2026 and “Avengers: Secret Wars” on December 17, 2027.
Disney and the 20th Century have not seen details on the plot of “The Simpsons” follow-up, but they shared the poster on Instagram. This has the catchphrase of pink doughnuts and “Homemers Coming collides with seconds.”
Created by Matt Groening, “The Simpsons” is the longest-running animation series and sitcom on television. It has already been updated throughout the 40th season, which airs in 2028 and 2029. Set in the fictional town of Springfield, the show chronicles the life of the Simpson family, including Papa Homer, Mama Marge, Kidsbert, Lisa and Maggie.
The feature film, entitled “The Simpsons Movie,” was a massive commercial success in July 2007, earning $536 million at the global box office gross against a $75 million budget. Directed by series veteran David Silverman, the film’s plot saw Springfield lock up under a giant glass dome after Homer accidentally contaminated the town’s lake. The sequel has been speaking for years, but nothing has come to fruition until now.
After dozens of seasons and one film since the show began in 1989, “The Simpsons” showrunner Matt Selman says streaming helped the series not only relate to cultural conversations, but also gain new fans.
“Now, instead of kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can watch it all, all day long, forever,” Selman told Variety over the summer. “Being on Disney+ has rejuvenated a bit for us. I’m not realising I need to rejuvenate, but I’m grateful.”
