It’s the morning after Emmy, and Casey Broys can spew. The chairman and CEO of HBO and MAX Content has been feeling better after the combination of HBO and HBO MAX won 30 Emmy Awards this year.
With the drama series, drama lead actor (Noah Weil), drama support actress (Katherine Lanatha), “Pitt”‘s victory was particularly sweet considering the story behind the show’s success and what it meant to Hollywood productions overall.
Breaking through the ‘pit’ is really a big deal for a lot of reasons,” Brews told Variety Monday morning. He is executive producer John Wells, R. Scott Gemmill screamed to Weil for accomplishing what they were trying to do. “But I think that shows like that are so pleased with which such shows embrace the principles of television.”
Variety spoke to Bloys about what’s next for “Pit” and whether “Hacking” will really end after Season 5. His views on this year’s disappointing “The White Lotus” Emmys (and see where next season will be set). Emmy Night’s biggest surprise. When “Euphoria” returns and expects a month to expect a new “Knights of Thrones” series, “A Seven Kingdoms,” and how 2026 is formed.
Can you begin to feel the stairway of support for the “pit” when predicting that they will pull this off?
I will never rely on walking because you never know. I think it was clear that people felt that “pit” was a “retirement.” You just don’t know what it will turn out. But I’m really pleased with how everything worked.
When Katherine Ranatha won the evening, she must have felt, “Yes, this is going in the right direction.”
I was able to see “This is a possibility.” You can start watching it.
What does “Pit” success represent to you? This is a show that plays these traditional TV beats that run 15 episodes. It’s also a local Los Angeles production.
It’s hard to do a good show, whether it’s a comedy, a drama, or a documentary. But what John, Noah and Scott wanted to do was not only a high-quality show, but a show set up to run 15 episodes. Therefore, the concept of the show essentially being one set makes the budget easier to manage. They also understand how to create 15 episodes, but they also understand how to get it back each year. That’s one of the things we think is our ability to leave on television and bring that show back every year. It’s understandable because we have a show that is huge and does something like “Our Last” or “House of the Dragon”. That’s great. But as an industry that has focused so much on them, I think it’s really hard to find bread and butter that stirs up weekly high quality episodes. I am particularly pleased that the “pit” is recognized as it was done. Winning an award is always great, but it’s a joy, especially for shows that are trying hard.
Are you still ready to talk about the spinoff? The night shift version of “Pit”?
no! Listen, when you decide to move forward in the “pit”, the idea is about to try this. I plan to develop other shows with this model. They don’t have to be spinoffs. But I think that model showed that “pits” can work for us. So we’re developing other types of shows: cop shows, family shows, etc. We’re developing them and trying to do it again. But, like I said, “pits” are lightning bolts of bottles. So you never know that we are trying to do something else, that will work. However, it has proven that the model could work with streaming.
Let’s talk about other big wins. “The Penguin” was the most common overall, with nine people. Christine Millioti has won the lead actress for Limited. But have you been disappointed that Colin Farrell didn’t get Emmy?
I was really hopeful. And obviously he had won many awards all the way to that, so that’s usually a good sign. But again, you never know. Whether or not it is perceived does not affect performance greatness. But Stephen Graham – “Adolescent” was a really, really powerful show. Very tough competition, and it doesn’t always break your path. I think his performance was pretty extraordinary for Colin.
Matt Reeves says there is ongoing discussion about a potential second season of “The Penguin.” What can you say about that?
They’re kicking ideas. Obviously, Matt (the next “Batman”) has to make a film. It’s ongoing, I believe. So I think he and Lauren (Lefran) are talking about ideas. So I hope there’s another story.
“Hack” was the winner of last year’s Emmy Comedy series. Obviously this year we played against Steam Roller, who was a “studio” but worked well with three wins, including Hannah Einbinder finally getting actress Emmy supporting comedy.
Yes, I think it was great that Hanna was recognized. And of course, I love seeing her work being recognized because Jean (Smart) is amazing and unparalleled. But it was really good to see Hannah break through.
On the red carpet, Hanna said the next season 5 was the final season of “Hacking.” Can you check it?
We usually leave it to the creators, so I wait for them to hear from them. But obviously we had a conversation about it. Ultimately, it becomes their decision.
They have said that there have been five seasons of stories in the past. Are you saying for them, “Are we ready to land this plane?”?
Oh yeah, I’m happy with their decision. But I think they’ll end up in the right place.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was that Jeff Hiller won the comedy support actor for “someone somewhere.” How shocked were you?
It was probably the sweetest moment of the night. We were excited that everyone was nominated for shows like “Someone Someone.” which is a beautiful show. Jeff Wine is great for him, great for the entire cast and for the show. That’s a bit of verification for everyone.
Do you feel like more people are discovering the show now?
It gives it a bit of a boost as he has Jeff in that victory. If people haven’t seen it, it’s a really great surprise to experience it. I hope more people will find it.
Is there a way to increase that?
At any time on the Max platform, they highlight all winners.
“The White Lotus” was a big Emmy beloved in the past. This year was a bit difficult with the main title theme music. What do you think of that?
I think it was a victim of its own success, in that there were so many multiple candidates in the category. That’s difficult. If you like the show and need to decide which two or three actors you really like, the voting split is real. The good news is that Mike hasn’t written season 4 so I’m sure he’ll come back and we’ll be back. It’s probably the next cycle, not the 2026 Emmy cycle.
Incidentally, yesterday, the cast members were on the carpet yesterday. Basically, we’ve confirmed that the next season will be in France. What more do we know about it?
I know it’s likely to be in France. The city and details have not yet been decided.
Are there still season 3 premier days for “Euphoria” in the future?
It will be spring, but we have not yet confirmed.
Same question as “Knights of the Seven Kingdoms.” I know what you’re hearing in early 2026, but is it the first quarter or second quarter? Do you push it against the summer?
I’m going to say January. How about that?
We like a month. What else stood out from you when it came to Emmy transport this year?
The victory in “The Pitt” was a great surprise. The victory for “Hacks” was a great surprise. Jeff Hiller’s victory was a great surprise. There was a general surprise in general. As an Emmy audience, and with those who participate in it, it’s even more exciting to see what you really don’t know, get in, and expect.
I did a good job of documenting this year too. “My own Pee Wee” won 3, and “100-Foot Wave” won 2.
And then he won for the first time in that category, saying, “Conan O’Brien has to go.”
Go beyond all this and look to next year. How about around 2026?
People ask me this question and I quickly panicked, oh my god, I had to do this again. But someone reminded me that we currently have a front runner for the drama that will return in January. So that feels good. “Task,” hopes Brad Ingelsby follows up on “Marle in East Town.” “Euphoria” is back. There is a “Golden Age.” “Hack” is back. A “comeback” is coming. A new Bill Lawrence Stephew Carell comedy is here. We’re going to have, I hope for another good year. But it’s a long way. And there are some really great limited series on Netflix that usually no one came. So who knows what they have in the store.
And like you said, you have an incumbent winner who will be back in the drama right now. What is the preview for Season 2 of “Pit”?
From my point of view, I don’t think they missed the beat. That’s what I want to do in the second season. The producers know what the show is. The actors are all calm, so they don’t miss the beat. Everything is smooth sailing.
