‘The Pit’ star Noah Wyle and creator R. Scott Gemmill have addressed the sudden departure of Supriya Ganesh, who played Dr. Samira Mohan, a senior medical resident on the series, after season two.
“It’s inevitable that it happens every season on this show, because as writers we have a hard time figuring out how much time has passed and we can realistically keep most of the ensemble together,” Wiley told me Sunday night at the PaleyFest screening and panel for “The Pit.” “There’s a high revolving door in the emergency room. As always, to keep the storyline fresh through cast changes, we try to introduce new characters and promote from within, but obviously Supriya has been a big part of our show from the beginning.”
“Dr Mohan is a beloved character and I love playing with her and working with Supriya. We wish her all the best in her next endeavours, and we will miss her dearly,” he continued.
Ganesh was initially announced to be attending PaleyFest, but on Saturday he posted a message on his social media saying he would not be attending the event. “Hello everyone. I don’t know why it hasn’t been removed from the site, but I will not be attending PaleyFest this Sunday,” she wrote. “I know some of you bought tickets to see me, but I want you to know that this is not a decision I made lightly. I love you all.”
When Variety’s Joe Otterson broke the news of Ganesh’s departure on April 2nd, a source said her departure was a story-driven decision. Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center is a teaching hospital, so it is normal for residents to come and go. Dr. Mohan also spent part of Season 2 deciding the next step in his career after completing his residency.
“This is kind of the nature of the show, unfortunately, the way medical professionals work is to come in, learn, and move on. We want to stay as true to that process as possible, so we’re going to be rotating the cast. But I think this is a great starting point for people and that’s the best we can do,” Gemmill said while walking the PaleyFest red carpet.
Shortly after Season 1 premiered, Ganesh said to me, “I’m not going to let you know what I’m talking about. “I never expected to be in a production as artistically and creatively fulfilling as ‘The Pit.’” When it worked out, I honestly felt like everything in my life had led up to that moment. Even the week I auditioned and was called back, I felt like something was watching me. A bird pooped on me, which Indians say is good luck. ”
At the same time Ganesh’s departure was confirmed, Variety exclusively reported that Ayesha Harris, who plays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to regular for season 3.
Gemmil also said that filming for season 3 will begin in June, with filming scheduled to take place in November to incorporate “cold weather” into the story.
