The 20th century studio has released a new trailer for “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third film in James Cameron’s “Avatar” series, which will be released on December 19th. The trailer shows the return of Jake Sally (Sam Worthington) and his family.
Worthington, Zoe Sal Danya, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Bailey Bass, British Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion and Eddifalco are returning cast members. Meanwhile, Michelle Yeo, Oona Chaplin and David Theuris will debut in the series as new characters.
The first “Avatar,” released in 2009, became the most profitable film ever at the global box office. It still holds that record, with a lifetime total of over $2.9 billion. The sequel, “Avatar: The Way of the Water,” appeared for over a decade in 2022, earning $2.3 billion at the box office, surpassing Cameron’s own “Titanic” as the third-highest gross film ever. The performances of the two “Avatar” titles are split only by “Avengers: Endgame,” which won $2.7 billion in 2019.
Documentaries aside, the “Avatar” film was Cameron’s only directorial feature in the 21st century. Cameron began developing “Avatars” in the 1990s, but it took more than a decade for technology to catch up with the concept. Film special effects are handled by Weta Workshop and Showcase Pioneering Filmmaking Technology in Motion Capture and CGI.
The fourth “Avatar” film is already set to be released in 2029 and fifth in 2031.
