‘The Office’ alum Brian Baumgartner has recalled the unusual behind-the-scenes controversy during his nine seasons as Kevin Malone, revealing that he once fought back against editors who cut out what he thought were “great” jokes.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baumgartner reflected on the unusual collaborative environment on the NBC comedy, where actors were often encouraged to brainstorm ideas and contribute to character development. Although not all suggestions were aired, most of the creative exchange was welcomed, he said, with one notable exception that “really pissed me off.”
The moment in question occurred during the season 5 episode “Baby Shower,” which featured Melora Hardin as Jan Levinson opposite Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. In this scene, Kevin awkwardly asks Jan about sperm donors, with a punch line that suggests Jan may be involved. Baumgartner called the line “a great pound-for-pound joke,” but said it was ultimately removed during the editing process.
Baumgartner said the decision stemmed from the network’s concerns that the gag could confuse viewers or suggest a storyline involving Kevin. He disagreed, arguing that the joke worked on its own and didn’t need to follow the story, and that the hesitation was an example of “overthinking”.
Although he “lost the argument” at the time, Baumgartner now sees the situation differently. The joke has since been revived in a streaming version of the episode, but he believes it needs years of validation.
“It’s interesting. You can’t watch that episode now and not see that moment happen. So this is a little bit of validation for me,” he said.
