Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially returning for the fourth installment of the hit series The Mummy.
Universal Pictures announced that the film, directed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette, is scheduled for wide theatrical release on May 19, 2028.
Fraser and Wise, whose involvement was first reported last fall, have signed on to reprise their roles in the film as adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell, but plot details are – ironically – kept under wraps.
The actors’ legend begins with the 1999 reboot ‘Hamunaptra’. This work tells the story of a treasure hunter who accidentally awakens a cursed Egyptian priest with supernatural powers. The film and its 2001 sequel Hamunaptra were huge hits, reviving the classic monster movie IP and establishing Fraser as a bankable action star. However, Weisz did not appear in the 2008 trilogy, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, so her return to the series is especially exciting for fans.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillette (Ready or Not and its sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come) will direct the new Mummy movie from a script by David Coggeshall (Family Plan, Orphan: First Kill). Sean Daniel, who has produced each of the studio’s $1.8 billion box office franchise since 1999’s Hamunaptra, including Hamunaptra Returns, The Scorpion King, Hamunaptra: Tomb of the Dragonlord, and 2017’s Dark Universe project, will also return.
William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein are also producing through their Project X Entertainment. In addition to starring in the film, Fraser will also executive produce alongside Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown and Dennis Stewart.
Executive VP of Production and Development Jay Polidoro and Director of Production and Development Jacqueline Garrel will oversee the project for the studio.
Fraser and Wise are repped by CAA and Linden Entertainment. Fraser is repped by Felker Tozczek Suddleson Abramson, and Wise is repped by Independent Talent, Hersh Wallerstein, and Hayum Matloff + Fishman.
CAA also represents Radio Silence along with Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Johnson, Shapiro, Slewett & Cole. Mr. Coggeshall is repped by WME, Writ Large and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.
