Savannah Guthrie is back on the “Today” show.
Savannah returned to Studio 1A at Rockefeller Plaza on Monday morning, wearing a short-sleeved yellow lace dress by Elie Tahari with a yellow heart pendant, more than two months after airing amid a nationwide search for her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie.
The bold, bright color has become a symbol of support and hope since Nancy disappeared on February 1, and Arizona residents left yellow flowers and ribbons in Nancy’s neighborhood in the days that followed.
“The yellow ribbon is a feeling of hope and support after someone goes missing,” one of Nancy’s neighbors told People magazine in February.
According to the National Museum of American Diplomacy, the symbol’s origins date back to 1979. At the time, 52 US diplomats were held hostage in Iran. Inspired by the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon on the Ore Oak Tree,” one of the diplomats’ wives called on citizens to hold up yellow ribbons as a show of support.
On February 18, Hoda Kotb, who filled in for Savannah during her absence, expressed her thoughts to the NBC family.
“I got a suggestion from one of my viewers and I’m doing the same thing,” she said. “We have a yellow rally around Studio 1A and everyone is wearing ribbons to show our love to Savannah and her family.”
“It’s nice to be home,” Savannah began her broadcast Monday morning. “Let’s go. Ready or not, let’s report the news.”
Sitting next to her was Craig Melvin, wearing a matching yellow tie, pocket square and enamel ribbon pin, and the studio was decorated with yellow flowers.
“Welcome back, Savannah. 💛,” the caption of her Instagram post from the “Today” show read.
Kotb commented, “Gold standard💛💛.”
