Spoiler Alert: Details for “The Masked Singer” Season 14 Episode 5, “Red, White, Clue,” which aired on February 4th on FOX, are below.
For Teddi Mellencamp, appearing on The Masked Singer “brought me out of a pretty dark place, and I’m forever grateful.” Mellencamp ended her career as Carla Lily after performing the No. 1 hit “Jack and Diane,” made famous by her father (while still performing as John Cougar). She previously performed Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.”
Among the panelists, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg had a point with Teddi Mellencamp. Ken Jeong thought Christina Applegate, Rita Ora said Selma Blair, and Robin Thicke said Danielle Fishel.
“Obviously, I’m not a singer by trade, so that part was a challenge for me,” Mellencamp said. “Plus, most of my memory has been distorted since the brain surgery. So, although I was a little nervous, I was excited to push myself out of my comfort zone and try something new. And I felt like it made me feel a little more alive.”
Mellencamp said she decided to appear on “The Masked Singer” because she watches it with her children. She said the children immediately recognized her after her first performance of the season. She also informed her father about this and asked him for advice on singing.
“He said, ‘Just sing it loud and proud. And if you sing something out of tune, it doesn’t matter.'” Had she remained on the show, Mellencamp would have loved to perform Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.”
Mellencamp has recently been in the news for her battle with stage 4 cancer. In particular, her father, John Mellencamp, made headlines when he told podcast host Joe Rogan that his daughter was “really sick” and “suffering right now.”
Teddi Mellencamp said on another podcast that she is undergoing immunotherapy and currently has no evidence of cancer, but is still considered stage 4. And on Wednesday, she seemed in good spirits as we discussed the latest star cast on “The Masked Singer”s “Red, White and Crew Night.”
In an early clue package for the show, Mellencamp, who plays Carla Lilly, hinted about her health. “I was recently reminded of how precious everything is. The doctors didn’t understand at first, but I knew something was wrong. I pushed back and needed answers. When they told me the diagnosis, my world stopped. But… I thought about my kids. I chose to face my fears and it seems to be working. I still have good days and bad days. But when this opportunity presents itself, I’m in it.”
High Voltage, Owl, Pangolin and Nasu join Galaxy Girl, Stingray, Cat Witch, Pugcasso, Snow Cone and Crane to advance to the next round.
Teddi Mellencamp (Cara Lilly) joins Claudia Oshley (Queen Corgi), Taraji P. Henson (Scarab), Tone Locke (Handyman), Tiffany Haddish (Le Fou Fou), Todd and Julie Chrisley (Croissant), and David “Big Papi” Ortiz (Google Eyes) as celebrities revealed so far on this season of “The Masked Singer.” 14.
Season 14 will see the return of host Nick Cannon and panelists McCarthy Wahlberg, Chung, Ora, and Thicke. Thicke began the episode by singing James Brown’s “Living in America.”
New this season is “America’s Insider,” where singer, dancer and social media personality Kylie Cantrall shares behind-the-scenes hints and tips with viewers. Twist: Cantrall wears a cat witch costume, but only removes her mask for the viewer. So viewers know who she is, but the panelists don’t.
“The Masked Singer” Season 14-themed episodes include homages to “Star Trek,” the ’90s comedy “Clueless,” the comic book series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and the blockbuster movie “The Twilight Saga.” Fox’s new “Fear Factor” reboot will also feature “Fear Factor: House of Fear Night” host Johnny Knoxville, and “Ozzfest Night” will honor the late rocker Ozzy Osbourne, including a special tribute by “The Masked Singer” alum Kelly Osbourne (Season 2’s Ladybug) paying tribute to her father’s musical influence.
Season 14’s 18 masked contestants include Eggplant, Pukasso, Queen Corgi, Croissant, Owl, 14 Karat Carrot, Snow Cone, Galaxy Girl, High Voltage, Gyoggly Eyes, Scarab, Handyman, Crane, Le Fou, Pangolin, Stingray, Cat Witch, and Calla Lily.
According to the show, the season 14 contestants have sold a total of 94 million records, earned 47 Teen Choice Award nominations, 12 Emmy nominations, two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one Tony Award win, and one Academy Award nomination.
