Savannah Guthrie has revealed the heartbreaking questions her two children, Vail and Charles, have asked her since their grandmother Nancy Guthrie was kidnapped.
“That’s very difficult for children, right? Because you want to protect them,” she told “Today” show colleague Hoda Kotb in an interview Thursday.
“They write to me all the time saying, ‘Mommy, do you have any clues? Have you heard anything? Is there any hope?'” Savannah said of her 9-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter with husband Michael Feldman.
“And I think we talked to them and tried to give them a little more certainty than we have, just to make them sad.”
In the interview, Savannah, 54, also said she felt her fame may have led to her mother’s kidnapping.
The journalist said he was first informed that Nancy, 84, may have been “kidnapped for ransom” by her brother Camron Guthrie.
She said, ‘How stupid am I? I didn’t want to believe it, but you think it’s because of me?’ And he said, ‘I’m sorry, but maybe you are.'”
“But I knew it. I hope not, but we don’t know yet. We don’t know anything, so I think it’s because she’s my mom and someone thought, ‘Oh, that woman has money, we can make money right away.’ It makes sense, but we don’t know.”
Savannah said it was “unbearable” to think it was her fault.
Nancy was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, on the night of January 31, and was reported missing the next day after failing to show up for church.
During the investigation, authorities found traces of blood on the elderly person’s front porch and realized the doorbell camera had been stolen.
Last month, the FBI released camera footage showing a masked suspect tampering with Nancy’s camera the night she disappeared.
Savannah and her siblings, Camron and Annie Guthrie, appealed to the suspects to bring their mother home after multiple ransom notes demanding Bitcoin were released.
Last month, a journalist offered a $1 million reward for the mother’s “miraculous” return.
She also revealed that she and her relatives are coming to terms with the heartbreaking reality that Nancy may have died.

After spending nearly two months in Arizona searching for her mother, Savannah made an emotional and unannounced visit to the Today show studio in New York City on March 5.
Last week, Page Six exclusively revealed that the mother-of-two could be back to work after her kids’ spring break next month.
Savannah reportedly wants to spend as much time as possible with Feldman and their two children before stepping back into the spotlight.
