Spanish film and television maps experience a creative renaissance as they move further towards decentralization, which has long been praised by filmmakers like Ridley Scott and David Lean.
Cádiz’s South Series International Festival helps to promote local builds. It promotes the finest productions made in Andalusia, promotes future talent and introduces the facility for international and national filming.
South aims to cultivate vibrant, locally rooted content with festival director Carles Montiel Words, and “shows the intention of Andalusian projects to make them even more relevant.”
Montiel’s statement constitutes twice as much ambition. It will raise the national and international recognition of Andalusian projects and place the expanded Andalusian as a shooting location that will accommodate a versatile world.
South Section: An outstanding title rooted in Andalusian creativity
This year’s South Section, the South, features refocus on stories told by Andalusian and Andalusian creators. One potential standout title in the sidebar is Disney+ TV drama “Invisible.” Turn on the fight against Nullying.
Directed and written by Celia de Molina, “El Antivlog” is a self-reflective comedy series produced by Lamamma Producciones and supported by Filmin Streaming Service. The South also features the Enrique Urbiz directed series “When no no see us”, created by Zeta Studios and HBO Max’s Daniel Corpus, as well as the top lining for Maribel Verdú. The thriller series follows an investigation into several crimes that occurred during Holy Week at Molone de La Frontera in Seville, linked to a nearby US Air Force Base.
In an exploration of local heritage, “La Morenita. Historia Grafica de la Virgen de la Cabeza” was created by Rosa Sanchez and produced by Huri Television Lision, and is an emotional and intellectual journey to one of Spain’s oldest Marian devotions and aired by local publisher Canard Sour.
Also, part of the South is a screening for “Una Perra Andaluza” season 2, Pablo Tocino’s low-budget driving series, conveying the lives of young people who explore their desires, sexuality and limitations. The Copodenieve Produced Series will be streamed on Filmin.
Andalusia South Boost: A Talent Crucible
The Andalusian South Boost Pitching Session, which strengthens the Ante in the second edition, presents five television projects in the development of Andalucian origins.
The novel-based thriller series “The Last Dove” (“Laultima Paloma”) by Granada-based writer Men Marias is produced by Capitan Alanya and Gion Alto, directed by Polomenarguez (“El Plan”, “El Talent”, “Ross Farada”). For international buyers and co-producers.
The project series “Correos y Telégrafos” causes the post office to collapse as it is set in a small town on the forgotten corner of rural Andalusia. The mockmentary style comedy is produced by Rosio Martin and David G. Marcelo of Seville-based Lafilm Hora. “The use of the post office blends the satire of the facility with fresh, sentimental portraits of the life of Spain’s depopulated countryside,” says Jacobo Palomo, creator of the series.
Once again produced by Lamamma Producciones, Celia de Molina’s “postparty” deals with the taboos of motherhood with an autobiographical, profane, ironic element.
The millennial-focused drama project Justa and Rufina was developed by Olga Navalón and Candela Cruz and produced by Azul Roto. The series explores the intergenerational inheritance of fear and disability through the lives of two young women, where the accounts and stories of the 1935 incident are intertwined.
Another project series chosen for pitching is “El Cantante,” created by Jorgena Ranjo and produced by Nana Films based on the memoirs of legendary Spanish singer Miguel Rios.
The Comité South Boost is formed by heavyweight panels in the industry. Carlos Rosado, president of the Andalusian Film Committee. Manuela Ocon is the production director of Movistar Plus+. Alberto Fernández, Director of RTVE’s Digital Platforms and Services, and Isabel Cabrera, Associate Director of Canal Sur.
