Thai mystery thriller series “Girl from Nowhere” is coming to Japan as the first international remake. The Fuji TV production “Tenkosei Nanno”, produced in partnership with GMM Studio International, will be distributed exclusively on Fuji TV’s FOD platform from April 24th.
Based on Season 1 of the original Thai series, the six-episode series reimagines each story for a Japanese setting, with each episode helmed by a different director. The lineup includes Yukihiko Tsutsumi (“20th Century Boys” live-action trilogy), Kazuyoshi Kumakiri (“My Man”), Yoo Yeon-sung (“Rage”), and Miyuki Hatanaka (“Kinpa and Onigiri: Similar but Different”).
The central role of a mysterious transfer student named Nanno, whose mysterious insight into the moral flaws of those around her drives the ratings of each episode, is played by 20-year-old Arisa Nakajima in her screen debut. Set in a different school as the backdrop for each chapter, the series explores the ambition, secrets, and corruption that pervade the organization.
The original series produced by Sour Bangkok debuted on Thailand’s GMM25 in 2018 and has enjoyed a second wave of success after landing on Netflix. The 2021 sequel Girl From Nowhere 2 reached the platform’s top 10 in various regions, including Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and multiple Southeast Asian markets. The IP has since expanded with a new universe production, Girl From Nowhere: The Reset, which airs weekly on Channel ONE HD 31 in Thailand and the oneD platform, and globally by Netflix.
“We are excited to partner with Fuji TV to launch the ‘Girl from Nowhere’ series outside Thailand for the first time in a key market like Japan,” said Ekachai Uekrongsam, Chief Content Officer and Managing Director of GMM Studios International. “This first-ever international remake welcomes a new Nanno to our growing multiverse of stories, brought to life by a respected visionary director, as part of our broader strategy to grow the series into a global IP and drive multi-platform transmedia expansion.”
Fuji Television executive producer Kenichiro Yasuhara said the original Thai series stood out for its unusual approach to storytelling. “Just like in ‘The Seven Deadly Sins,’ all aspects of human desire and darkness unfold in the closed world of school in ‘The Girl from Nowhere,'” Yasuhara said. “When I first watched the original Thai series, I felt that it was a bold and innovative school mystery thriller, a completely new type of drama not found in Japanese school dramas. Now, there is an ocean of infinite possibilities for dramas. I took courage to set out to create a Japanese version worthy of the original work.”
GMM Studios International holds exclusive international distribution and licensing rights for Japanese-language titles in all outlets outside Japan, with ONE31 managing global sales.
Bangkok-based GMM Studios International is led by filmmaker Ekachai Uekrongsam (“Beautiful Boxer,” “Pleasure Factory”) and produces premium scripted series and features across multiple genres. Recent titles include Netflix’s Doctor Climax, The Girl from Nowhere 2, and Amazon MGM Original Movies The Old Save.
