Telemundo’s high-octane superseries “Lord of the Skies” (“El Señor de los Cielos”) is set to return for an unprecedented 10th season for a U.S. Hispanic series.
“This is currently the longest-running Spanish-language franchise in the world,” said Javier Pons, Telemundo’s chief content officer. The teaser trailer for Season 10 premieres exclusively on Variety.
Led by Luis Zelkovic, the show’s main writer and creative lead, filming on the 90-episode superseries in Mexico City is expected to begin in the coming months, with the goal of debuting the new season around the summer’s FIFA World Cup, when viewer participation will be at its peak.
Season 10 marks a deliberate return to the heart of the story, focusing on drug lord Aurelio Casillas as a man who can rule the world but cannot control himself. After magically disappearing, Aurelio reemerges to seize control and avenge his family, but his betrayal of those closest to him puts him on a dangerous threshold that destroys his empire.
Pons said Amaya’s return allows the network to honor the series’ heritage and move the story forward with new creative ambitions.
For the company, the return to the series two years after the Season 9 finale comes at a time when it is reinforcing its commitment to premium scripted storytelling. “Casillas Dynasty,” a spinoff from “Lord of the Skies,” launched simultaneously on Telemundo and streaming platform Peacock and ranked as the No. 1 Spanish-language show in its time slot for its first month.
In addition to starring, Amaya will also return as an executive producer. “He’s not only a great actor, he’s an integral part of our series. There’s no one who understands Aurelio Casillas’ character, the tone of the series, the world we’ve built better than he does. He knows it inside and out. So who would be a better partner for me as an executive producer? It makes perfect sense to have Rafa by my side,” Pons said, adding that most of the season will take place in urban areas this time around.
“In many ways, I’m doing what I’ve always done. This time I’ve got the title and I’ve been given a little more freedom to make decisions. But my commitment is always the same: to make everything as strong as possible. That way, when the time comes to step back into the shoes of Aurelio Casillas, I completely understand his journey: a man who has the ability to conquer the world, but cannot control himself,” Amaya told Variety.
In preparation for her comeback, Amaya watched all nine seasons. “Aurelio Casillas is risking everything he has. Yes, for him he lost everything and got everything back again. But this time we are talking about his family, his blood and what is left of it. So it will be very intense, because he carries all the baggage from the first season and every part of it will be taken into account.”
“These days at Content Americas, it’s clear how dynamic the market has become. One of the key areas that we’re focusing on with Telemundo Studios is co-production. If there’s a defining theme for Content Americas, it’s co-production. That’s what everyone is talking about,” said Pons, who is currently attending a conference in Miami.
The launch of Season 10 of “The Lord of the Sky” comes as Telemundo celebrates another milestone in its reputation, especially in the digital space. It’s also winning in live content, strengthening its lead in news and daytime programming while expanding faster than its rivals as audiences shift between platforms.
According to Telemundo, the company expanded its leadership across digital, streaming, FAST, and social in 2025, citing the following statistics from Comscore, Adobe Analytics, and YouTube Studio.
#1 Spanish-language broadcast network in digital viewership. Average monthly uniques of 11.8 million, +12% increase compared to Univision. Telemundo recorded 528 million cross-platform watch hours, the highest ever. FAST channels watched 129 million hours, an increase of +212% year-over-year, marking the strongest FAST performance ever. Among YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook, Telemundo ranks #1 with 12 billion social video views annually (+45% year over year).
