As Tate McRae has risen from breakout talent to pop powerhouse, her love life has received more and more attention each year. Her public dating history goes back to a low-key partnership and goes on to two more high-profile relationships with NHL player Cole Schillinger and fellow musician The Kid LaRoy. She was most recently reported to be in a relationship with NHL player Jack Hughes in February 2026.
Reflecting on navigating the public eye, McRae told ELLE in May 2024: “Especially these days, with everything being public and everything being documented and out on the internet, it can be really hard not to drift into that space of, ‘What are people going to think about me now, what are they going to say?'”

Johnny Hader
According to People, McRae dated Johnny Hader, also from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from 2019 to 2021. The pair kept their romance private, and Hader appeared as a cameraman on McRae’s 2020 hit “You Broke Me First” together before they broke up.

McRae and NHL player Cole Schillinger began dating in 2021. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight the following year, McRae explained how the two met, saying the Columbus Blue Jackets center was one of his “friends of a friend of my brother’s friends.”
The two made their relationship even more public on social media, specifically sharing snapshots from their August 2022 trip to Cabo, Mexico. The following month, they were photographed arriving at Jason Wu’s New York Fashion Week show, one of their few public appearances as a couple.
According to People magazine, the pair appear to have broken up sometime in 2023, and McRae has deleted photos of Schillinger from social media. In December of the same year, McRae spoke more broadly about her past relationships in an interview with Elliott King. “I still have a good relationship with my ex-girlfriend,” she said. “I’m not bashing them. Even the song ‘Exes’ sounds like a ‘diss your ex’ record, but mostly it’s like I’m dissing myself. This song talks about how bad I am in relationships and all the things I do sometimes to self-sabotage.”
Although neither McRae nor Schillinger have publicly detailed the circumstances that led to their breakup, rumors began to circulate that Schillinger had been unfaithful. Later, in the same week that McRae, a longtime hockey fan, performed at the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend, he denied these cheating claims, calling them “all false.”
The Kid LaRoa
McRae and Australian singer The Kid LaRoy first surfaced as dating in January 2024, when they were spotted on a trip to Mexico and photographed together in Los Angeles shortly after. Laroy apparently confirmed their relationship at a performance in Dublin in April of the same year. “I want everyone here to sing as loud as they can because my girlfriend is here tonight and I don’t want her to look lame,” he told the audience as McRae watched from his sleeve, Billboard reported.
About three months later, LaRoy made their romance official on Instagram to celebrate McRae’s birthday. He shared a photo of them kissing with the caption, “Happy 21st birthday. You made me feel better! I love you @tatemcrae.”
They performed together further throughout the summer, and in August 2024, during McRae’s Think Later world tour, McRae brought him on stage at Madison Square Garden as a surprise guest. According to Variety, the couple sang his hit song “Without You” and performed together in public for the first time.
During an appearance on the Mitch Thulli Chat Show in November 2024, McRae revealed that she and LaRoy had known each other for about three years before they started dating. “To be honest, we weren’t that close of friends. We were kind of acquaintances and we always had awkward encounters,” she said. “All of our encounters were really awkward, but then something clicked.”
In January 2025, a month before the release of the duet “I Know Love,” which appears on McRae’s album So Close to What, they were photographed holding hands in New York City. In March, they attended Vanity Fair’s Oscars afterparty, and in May they traveled to Paris, where they were spotted leaving the same hotel and attending the French Open wearing matching Miu Miu outfits.

LaRoy spoke to ELLE about his admiration for McRae in a June 2025 interview. “She’s the hardest-working artist I’ve ever met in my life. And I don’t say that because she’s my girlfriend,” he said. “When I see how hard she works, it inspires and inspires me to emulate and do the same. There’s something really, really motivating about that, and it’s also really appealing.”
However, in July, signs of a breakdown appeared. LaRoy appeared to confirm the breakup in an X post after users accused him and his team of encouraging negative online comments about McRae in order to promote his song “Hot Girl Problems.” Laroy denied any involvement, writing, “I know that I have nothing to do with this incident and I do not agree with any of this behavior. I am working to remove them.”
He then shared screenshots of text exchanges with people who appeared to be members of his team. “Guys, is this coming from inside? If so, could you please delete these,” he wrote in a text message. “Tate and I are good friends, but this looks like a mess/It’s awful.”
Neither McRae nor LaRoi have publicly addressed the reported breakup.

In November 2025, it was reported that McRae was in a relationship with New Jersey Devils hockey player Jack Hughes. In a photo shared by celebrity gossip site Deuxmoi, the two were spotted having dinner in New York City.
In February 2026, a source told Entertainment Tonight that their relationship was “still new” and that they were “enjoying getting to know each other better.” The source further added, “They have a lot of the same friends and that’s how they started hanging out. He goes to her shows and she likes to support him at his matches.”
A source said their relationship was casual and “she’s not looking for anything serious, but he really likes her.”
McRae and Hughes have not confirmed their relationship, and McRae has not disclosed their current relationship status.
